The Afternoon the Rain Slowed Me Down
On Saturday afternoon the sky suddenly went dark, and raindrops hammered the window glass. Mom went to the supermarket, and the house was left with nothing but the ticking of the wall clock and the sound of rain. I had planned to rush through my homework in two hours and then play video games, but a clap of thunder knocked out the router, and my phone lost its signal too. I paced around the living room a few times, then pulled from the shelf the library book I had borrowed half a month ago and never opened.
At first I was just leafing through it, but by the third page I was hooked. The rain kept falling and I kept reading, and when the light in the room dimmed and I looked up, I had finished nearly half the book. It had been a long time since I had read like that on my own, with no one pushing me. When Mom came home and saw me reading under the lamp, she froze for a moment and said nothing. That single frozen moment stayed with me longer than any praise could have.
Before that, my studying had always been a race: ten minutes between classes spent scrolling my phone, homework done while my mind drifted to that night's short videos, vocabulary memorized with my eyes on the page but my head far away. I had always believed doing two things at once was efficiency. That rainy afternoon showed me what I had really lost was the ability to sink into one thing. Finishing a single task from start to finish taught me more than a whole frantic day combined.
The rain softened, and streaks of water still slid down the window. I took out a fresh sheet of paper and replanned my studies: every evening, forty minutes with no phone, spent only on reading and sorting out my mistakes; on weekends, first write out a list and cross off each item as it is done; before bed, run through the day's material once. The plan was not beautifully written, but I taped it to the corner of my desk where I could see it whenever I looked up.
Three weeks have passed. My grades have not jumped overnight, but I can clearly feel the difference: I can sit still through problems, I remember what I memorize, and I no longer feel a day has been wasted. The first week was the hardest. Halfway through my work my hands itched for the phone, so I wrote down each urge on paper and dealt with it only after the forty minutes were up. By the second week I could finish a whole test paper before checking answers. Last week it rained again, the router went out again, and I did not panic at all - I walked straight to the bookshelf and pulled out a book. I already remembered that afternoon from before. That downpour taught me no knowledge. It simply forced me into one quiet afternoon, and let me discover that I, too, can go deep. That is probably the most valuable thing I picked up on that rainy day.
The List I Rewrote on a Rainy Day
The list taped to the corner of my desk has a faint ring of water stain along its edge. Every time I see it, I am back on that rainy afternoon.
It was a Wednesday, and the rain began during the second morning class. When the lunch bell rang, everyone with an umbrella rushed out toward the playground. I had forgotten mine, so I stayed behind alone in the classroom. The room was strangely quiet: raindrops crawled down the window, and the sound of rain muffled all the noise from the street. I took out the math homework I had been putting off, and in that stillness I finished the long problems in one sitting without once looking up. I even solved the final geometry question. When I set my pen down and heard the rain, I noticed a thin film of sweat on my hands.
After that day I began to like rainy weather. Others find it a nuisance. I know that once it rains, the world slows down for me. On the walk home I can hear my own footsteps; at home I open a book and not one character slips away. Reading on a rainy day is different from any other day: the rain hangs like a curtain, and the heavier it falls, the steadier my heart gets. Even books I used to give up on after two pages keep pulling me forward. My deskmate once asked why I finish homework so fast on rainy days. I thought for a long time and could only say one thing: because the rain keeps every other sound outside.
That same afternoon I realized my old study plan was a decoration: it said review every subject, yet I had never once followed it. I fished a blank sheet out of my pencil case and rewrote it: three math calculations every day, one English passage read aloud, twenty minutes of free reading before bed, each item marked with a time, each checked off when done. The last line was finished just as the rain stopped, but the quiet did not stop with it. I have used that rainy-day list ever since.
The rain always stops, but the quiet that afternoon left behind has stayed with me. Last month, on a blazing sunny day, I could not settle at home, so I threw open the curtains, sat down, and silently counted the birds outside the window. By the time I reached twenty-something, I was back in that state. Now rain or no rain, the moment I sit down at my desk, I can call back that feeling of focus. That is the gift the rain gave me, and it is more dependable than any burst of enthusiasm.
