How to Write a Diary About the Last Class Before Graduation: Three Scenes, Without Using the Word 'Reluctance'
The last class before graduation — this diary is the hardest one to write well: the feeling is real, but once it hits the page it turns into shouting 'I am so reluctant, I do not want to leave'. The way out: do not write the emotion, write three scenes. The outline already named them — the message on the blackboard, the teacher turning to wipe her tears, the whole class reading aloud together. Your job is to bring each scene back.
Scene one, the blackboard message. Do not just write 'there was a line on the blackboard' — copy that line down. Suppose Ms. Li wrote 'the road ahead is long; walk slowly; never forget why you set out' — twenty characters, copied exactly into the diary, plus one chalk detail: she wrote it with her left hand, and the last character came out a little crooked because the bell had already rung. The actual words of the message are the heart of this scene; the more exactly you copy them, the truer the diary.
Scene two, the teacher wiping her tears. This is where the piece most easily goes overboard. The discipline: actions only, no psychology. Do not write 'the teacher was deeply moved' or 'her eyes welled with hot tears'; write 'she turned around, pretended to look at the blackboard, and quickly wiped her eye with the back of her hand'. Suppose you saw her pull out a tissue, press it against her palm, then put it back in her pocket — the tissue was still dry. These actions are ten times stronger than the word 'moved'.
Scene three, the whole class reading aloud. Write the sound. Suppose the text was 'Our Days': the first time the class read together, the voices were uneven, some fast, some slow; the second time they merged, and the boys in the back row went hoarse; on the line 'why do our days never return', more than forty voices stretched the ending long. Put the sound in the diary and the reader hears it.
Arrange the three scenes in class order: the blackboard message was already there before class, the tear-wiping happens mid-lesson, the reading comes in the last minutes. Open each paragraph with a time handoff: 'when I entered the classroom in the morning', 'halfway through the lesson', 'ten minutes before the bell'.
Save the emotion for the last sentence, derived from the scenes. Suppose you write 'at dismissal I looked back at the blackboard; those twenty characters were still there' — the reluctance lives inside the action of looking back, without the word 'reluctance' ever appearing. Count your words when done: for a diary of about five hundred characters, give each scene around a hundred and twenty, with a few dozen left for opening and closing, and it fits.
A Sample Diary of the Last Class Before Graduation: See How Feeling Lands, Paragraph by Paragraph
The sample diary below is titled 'The Last Class'. Read it whole first, then go paragraph by paragraph to see where each feeling grows — from which action, which quoted words.
Paragraph one: 'June 20, sunny. When I entered the classroom this morning, there was a new line on the blackboard: 'Children, walk slowly, and never forget why you set out.' Ms. Li is left-handed, but this line was written with her right hand, and the last character ended a little crooked. I guess the bell rang when she was only halfway done.' The diary rules are set at once — date and weather on one line. The message is copied exactly; it is the most important quotation in the piece. A left-hander writing right-handed, the crooked ending stroke: two details showing the teacher wrote in a hurry, with her heart hidden in the crookedness. 'I guess' is honest — in an observation-style diary, inference must be marked.
Paragraph two: 'Halfway through the lesson, Ms. Li started telling us about the year she first took our class in third grade, then stopped in the middle. She turned around, pretended to look at the blackboard, and quickly wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. When she turned back she smiled and said, 'All right, books open.' Lin Xiaoman in the front row held up half a tissue; Ms. Li did not take it, just waved her hand.' This is the 'teacher turns to wipe her tears' scene. There is no word 'cry' and no 'moved' anywhere: stop, turn, wipe, turn back, smile, wave — six actions in a row. The detail of refusing the tissue is brave — the teacher does not want the moment to become a farewell ceremony, and that refusal weighs more than any lyricism.
Paragraph three: 'Ten minutes before the bell, Ms. Li said, let us read 'Our Days' one more time together. The first reading was uneven; the boys in the back dragged the beat. The second was together, and on the line 'why do our days never return', the ending vowels of more than forty voices stretched long, like a train pulling out of the station. Afterward no one spoke; it was quiet for about five seconds.' The reading scene is written through sound and silence. The two readings show change; 'like a train pulling out' is the only simile in the piece — one, not a pile. 'Five seconds of silence' is the reverse side of sound and the heaviest moment of feeling: to write reluctance, do not write crying — write the five seconds after the reading ends.
Paragraph four: 'At dismissal I packed my bag and looked at the words on the blackboard once more. The student on blackboard duty stood at the podium with the eraser raised, and did not let it come down.' The ending calls back to the blackboard message, closing the loop. 'The eraser raised but not brought down' — the whole class cannot bear to wipe those words away; one action is worth a hundred 'I do not want to graduate's.
After reading, compare the plan: about five hundred characters, three scenes of roughly a hundred and twenty each, two quotations (the blackboard message and 'All right, books open'), a string of actions, one simile. The feeling is never shouted directly; it all lives in the copied words and the actions witnessed.
