Arranging Three Home-Visit Materials: Entering, Talking About the Child, Leaving
The entrance paragraph's job is to let readers see the home; budget about one hundred fifty words. Do not write "I arrived at Xiao Ming's home"; write what your eyes caught first. Suppose the sample reads: while changing shoes you notice, on the bottom shelf, a pair of work shoes with the soles coming unglued, toes pointing outward as if ready to leave any moment; on the coffee table lies the child's workbook, with an unfinished bowl of green beans pressed beside it. Two details suffice: the work shoes speak of making a living, the beans speak of time chopped up by housework. Choose environmental details that have nothing to do with the child yet are everywhere about him; the warmth of the visit starts here.
The talking-about-the-child paragraph is the center, three hundred words, and the mother's smile must appear here. Let the mother speak first and you listen. Suppose the sample reads: she brings out a plastic bag holding the child's certificates and a few drawings, saying "his father works far away; I have not thrown a single one of these", and she smiles while saying it, pressing her lips together first, as if afraid of sounding too proud. Note how the smile is written: put a small action before it, pressing lips, rubbing hands, wiping the apron on her thigh, and the smile gains layers. Your role is recorder; quote one or two of her exact words, quotation beats paraphrase.
The leaving paragraph carries the feeling, one hundred fifty words, but the feeling may not be stated as "I was moved". Suppose the sample reads: going downstairs you look back, she stands at the stairwell mouth, the plastic bag still in her hand, the light behind her, waving and saying "take care, teacher". Write the picture, then add one line of inner movement, like "I stood in the stairwell a few seconds, remembering how he slumped over in class today; so a slumping child goes home to a light left on for him". Picture plus one inner line, and the feeling stands.
One warning: home-visit essays easily turn into commendations, all "how hard the parents work, the child must improve". The fix is to allow the phrase "not easy" exactly once in the whole essay and hand all the rest to details: unglued shoes, unfinished beans, certificates in a plastic bag. Readers will ache on their own; they do not need your summary.
With the three paragraphs arranged, the essay lands near six hundred words. Check three places: does the entrance hold at least two environmental details, does the mother's smile have a preceding small action and one direct quote, does the closing feeling hang on a picture. If all three hold, the essay is warm without being cloying.
Reading a Sample Home-Visit Essay: How Warmth Is Accumulated
Suppose the first paragraph reads: "After the doorbell rang I waited a long time; when the door opened I saw an apron first, then her, untying the apron as she said 'come in teacher, it's a mess'. While changing shoes I glimpsed, on the bottom shelf, work shoes with unglued toes wrapped once in clear tape." Commentary: the apron enters before the person, showing she came from the kitchen or a work site; "it's a mess" is the true opening of countless home visits. The taped work shoes are the heaviest detail of the paragraph; they say thrift without saying poverty. Copyable move: let one object speak for the family.
The second paragraph: "After sitting down she did not ask about grades first. She took a twice-folded plastic bag from her pocket and spread it open: three certificates, two drawings. 'His father works far away; I have not thrown a single one.' Before speaking she pressed her lips, then smiled, rubbing the bag's handle the whole time." Commentary: "did not ask about grades first" breaks the reader's expectation; home-visit essays fear opening with scores. The bag is folded, meaning it has lived in her pocket a long time; certificates and drawings stored together mean they weigh the same to her. The smile comes with the rubbing, nervousness and pride present at once. Copyable move: give the mother one old object she cannot bear to discard.
The third paragraph: "When I left she saw me to the stairwell mouth, the plastic bag still pinched in her hand. The voice-activated light glowed behind her, throwing her shadow onto the steps below me. Two flights down, I looked back; she was still there." Commentary: the leaving paragraph states no feeling, only light, shadow, and one look back. The shadow thrown on the steps means the picture is printed on every step the teacher takes downward. Copyable move: leave one picture at departure, and look back only once.
See which two failures it avoided. First, no "poor parents everywhere" style summary; zero commentary sentences, commentary absorbed into details. Second, the mother does not cry; many home-visit essays force mothers to tears, but ordinary families smile more than they cry, and writing the smile is truer. Both avoided by one discipline: write what you saw, not what you felt.
An imitation checklist: one object at the door, one old object plus one direct quote plus one pre-smile action for the mother, one picture plus one look back at departure. Budget one hundred fifty, three hundred, one hundred fifty words. After writing, delete every word like "moved" or "not easy"; the essay grows heavier instead.
