Building an Essay on Mom's Smile: Back View, Fine Lines, Growing Up
The three required scenes have an inner order: the back view is looking from far away, the fine lines are looking from close up, and growing up is looking back through time. Build the structure by camera distance, not by running time. For 600 words: back view 200, fine lines 250, feeling 150, opening and closing 40 each. The close-up gets the most words because the title lands on the lines.
Step one, the cooking back view: write only the action chain, no reflections. Suppose: she stands at the stove, left hand on the pot handle, right hand on the spatula, the spatula pushed along the bottom of the pan, and when the oil smoke rose she tilted her head aside and tucked her hair behind her ear. Four actions out of the chain are enough: hold, push, tilt, tuck. Suppress all reflection; if phrases like I feel or I realize appear in this paragraph, cut them.
Step two, the fine lines at the corners of her smiling eyes, the bullseye of the essay, needs one close encounter. Build a reason that makes the distance legitimate: she bends over a phone checking vegetable prices and you lean in, or she crouches to tie your shoe under the ceiling lamp. Only within half a meter can the lines be written. Suppose: when she smiles her eyes narrow first, and the lines run outward from the corners, three on the left, two on the right, shallow, but all there. Do not write that the years are merciless; counting the lines says the years for you, with less effort than sighing.
Step three, the feeling after growing up, uses time contrast, not lyricism. Suppose: at this distance as a child I looked up, and her smile fell from above; at this distance now we are eye to eye, the smile right in front of me, and the lines visible clearly for the first time. One smile, two heights; feeling needs no adjectives, the contrast speaks. Add one present action: you want to reach out and take the two strands of hair from beside her ear, your hand starts halfway and comes back, replaced by saying, Mom, the vegetables are burning.
Open directly in the kitchen, with oil smoke or a sound inside the first 40 words. Close on one small present-tense action, no summary. Suppose: she turns off the flame, carries the plate out, still tilting her head first, then tucking the hair. Repeating the back-view action at the end lets readers discover on their own that this action never changed, and that is the years, no announcement needed.
A Sample Essay, Mom Within Half a Meter: Beauty Without Piling On
Suppose the sample opens: the kitchen lamp throws her shadow onto the tile floor, and the shadow is wider than she is. Review: not one word like beautiful or great in the whole essay; the first line builds a picture with lamp and shadow, and shadow wider than the person is an observation, not rhetoric. Copyable trick: the first paragraph hands over only objects and light, with a zero quota for adjectives.
The second paragraph is the back view: she tosses the wok once, the vegetables turning over sound like a short rain, she frees her right hand to wipe twice on the apron, and keeps going. Review: like a short rain is the first and only simile so far, placed on a sound, exactly right. Wipe twice and keep going writes down never stopping; the person cooking does not philosophize, and the author does not philosophize for her. Copyable trick: limit similes to one, spent on the plainest action.
The third paragraph, the fine lines, handled like this: I hand her the plate, and as she takes it she leans in, the lamp overhead whitening her face, and I see the fine lines at the corners of her smiling eyes, like cracks on a dried-out riverbed, shallow, but really there. Review: leaning in creates the half-meter distance, the lamp is fill light, two physical steps precede the lines. The dried riverbed is the second and last simile, two similes total is the ceiling, and that is the hard measure of not piling on. Shallow, but really there, six words carrying a thread of unwillingness, emotion hidden inside a short sentence instead of shouted. Copyable trick: two physical setup moves before the lines appear, and never more than two similes in the whole piece.
The fourth paragraph is the feeling of growing up: this year I am taller than she is was built by stacking the year she bent down to pick up a fallen vegetable leaf onto the year I reached up and could not. Review: the word years never appears, and two events stacked give time its thickness. This is the orthodox way of fusing scene and feeling: feeling never walks out alone, it grows on the scene. Copyable trick: to write the years, never write the word years; place two actions years apart side by side.
The ending: she sets the plate down and smiles once more, this time with her back to the lamp, so I cannot see the corners of her eyes, only the apron strings knotted into a bow behind her waist. Review: the ending deliberately blurs the lines and yields the view to the apron strings; clear and unclear alternating makes the reader remember those two lines all the more. Copyable trick: arrange one moment of not-seeing at the place the reader most wants to see, and closure beats delivery.
