How to Write a Character-Description Composition Lesson Plan: Designing Objectives, Key Points, Process and Board Notes

The most common mistake when writing a composition lesson plan is turning it into a speech script: pages of what the teacher will say, with no sign of what students will do or how well they must learn. A standard lesson plan has four elements: teaching objectives, key and difficult points, teaching process, and board design. Each element does one job, and they chain together; miss one and the lesson falls apart.

The first element is teaching objectives. Write them with observable, testable action verbs instead of vague phrases like cultivate ability. For a lesson on writing about a teacher, three objectives work: students can state that showing a character trait requires a concrete example plus detail description; students can find at least two details in a model text and explain their effect; students can write a passage of about 150 words about their own teacher within fifteen minutes, with one example and at least one action or expression detail. The three lines cover method, appreciation, and writing, and can be checked against the homework afterwards.

The second element is key and difficult points. The key point is the core of the objectives: showing character traits through concrete examples and details. The difficult point is what students cannot yet do but the lesson reaches for, such as turning a general judgment into a concrete scene. Students often write my teacher is responsible without showing what responsibility looks like; turning judgment into scene is exactly the difficulty. Keep the two points separate, since reviewers check whether they are distinguished.

The third element is the teaching process, the body of the plan. Arrange it as a stepped chain of stages, each with teacher activity, student activity, and estimated time. In a forty-minute lesson: a five-minute guessing game where the teacher reads three descriptions of one local teacher and students guess who it is, proving that description is feature; a twelve-minute model-text stage where class finds examples and details in a short essay and asks what the detail lets you see; a three-minute method summary written on the board; a fifteen-minute in-class writing drill; a five-minute sharing and feedback stage using the rubric; and a two-minute wrap-up assigning the full essay. Write the transition lines between stages so the sequence makes sense.

The fourth element is board design. In a composition lesson the board is a writing scaffold, not a knowledge list. Draw a simple map: character trait in the center, branching into concrete example and detail description, with the detail branch splitting into action, speech, expression, and appearance. Students can look up at this map while writing, so the board truly supports them. In the plan, describe it in words with arrows.

Finally check completeness: are objectives testable, are key and difficult points separated, do stages carry time and transitions, does the board support the drill. If all four pass, the plan is both standard and genuinely teachable.

A Complete 800-Word Lesson Plan for Writing About My Teacher, with Paragraph-by-Paragraph Commentary

Below is a complete lesson plan for a fifth-grade, forty-minute composition lesson on writing about a teacher. Each stage is followed by a short commentary explaining the design intent, so teachers can adapt it to their own classes.

Objectives: one, students can state that showing a character trait needs a concrete example plus detail description; two, students can find two details in the model text and explain their effect; three, students write a passage of about 150 words about a teacher, containing one example and one action or expression detail. Commentary: the three objectives begin with state, find, and write, all testable in class, none vague, which is the first pass a plan must clear.

Key point: showing traits through examples plus details. Difficult point: turning a general judgment into a concrete scene. Commentary: the key point matches the objectives, and the difficult point hits the real reason writing stays vague; stating them separately meets the standard.

Stage one, lead-in, a guessing game, about five minutes. The teacher reads three descriptions of the class Chinese teacher without naming her; students guess who, and the teacher asks which sentence gave it away. Commentary: the game is not for noise; the guess works because the description captures features, so students discover that writing people means catching features. The lead-in connects directly to the writing goal, which is the right logic for stage design.

Stage two, model text, about twelve minutes. The short essay Teacher Wang's Chalk Dust tells one event: Teacher Wang wipes the blackboard with her sleeve and never minds the dust on her cuff. Students underline the example sentence, wave-line the detail sentence, then tell a partner what kind of teacher the detail shows. The teacher writes found keywords on the board. Commentary: one event in the model avoids piling up examples; underlining and pair talk involve everyone; asking what teacher you see points reading toward craft instead of vague sentiment.

Stage three, method summary, about three minutes. Class condenses findings into: first pick the trait, then choose the example, then slow the camera to write actions and expressions. Commentary: three minutes turn intuition into an operable formula and bridge into writing; this step is often skipped, and skipping it visibly lowers drill quality.

Stage four, in-class writing drill, about fifteen minutes. Students write one moment of a teacher, about 150 words, then self-check for an example and a detail. Commentary: fifteen minutes is the floor for in-class writing; under twelve minutes most students cannot finish; the self-check list front-loads the rubric and lightens later feedback.

Stage five, sharing and feedback, about five minutes. Project one or two drafts; the class evaluates against two criteria, example and detail; the teacher demonstrates rewriting one flat sentence. Commentary: judging by criteria instead of saying it is good teaches students to measure writing; one demonstrated rewrite beats ten general comments.

Stage six, wrap-up, about two minutes. Assign the full essay My Teacher with two or three examples. Board design: character trait in the center, left branch concrete example, right branch detail description, with detail splitting into action, speech, expression, appearance. Commentary: the board is the method map, visible while students write, and the homework requirement extends the class goal in steps.
