The Little Chef and the Magic Pot: Three Steps to Calm Down

The little chef got a magic pot at the Forest Market. The old pot maker who sold it said: this pot reads your mind. If you quietly picture what you want to cook, it cooks exactly that; if your mind is a jumble, it cooks a jumble. The little chef didn't believe it. He hugged the pot home and that very night set out to make tomato egg-drop soup.

The first time, the pot had barely touched the stove when he ran off to watch TV. His mind was on the cartoon, his eyes on the screen, with only half his attention left in the kitchen. The magic pot read his mind and produced a black lump that smelled like burnt tires. For the first failure, he blamed the pot for being broken.

The second time, he did better and stood by the stove without moving. But his head was stuffed with too many things: homework due tomorrow, a board game he wanted to win, and impatience because the soup cooked too slowly—he lifted the lid to peek seven or eight times. He watched the water boil away, and before the egg even went in, the bottom scorched again. For the second failure, he set the pot on the floor and swore he'd never use it.

The next day he went to ask the old pot maker. The old man taught him a three-step method for calming down. Step one: take three deep breaths before lighting the fire, and chase everything else out of your head. Step two: line up the steps in your mind first—what to cut, what to add, and in what order—and only start when the order is clear. Step three: do one thing at a time. When you cut, just cut; when you watch the flame, just watch the flame. The magic pot isn't mind-reading sorcery, the old man said. What it reads is whether you are focused.

The third time, the little chef followed the three steps. Deep breaths, steps lined up: cut the tomato, beat the egg, boil the water—each moment doing only the thing in his hands. He stopped lifting the lid to peek and just listened to the water. When it boiled, in went the tomato, then the egg poured in a slow circle. Minutes later, a fragrance slipped out through the gap of the lid, caught the puppy's nose first, then drifted into the yard and drew the neighbors to the kitchen door. The soup came out red with tomato and gold with egg, and it tasted wonderful.

The little chef wiped the magic pot clean and finally understood the old pot maker: a restless mind burns even the best pot; calm down, do one thing at a time, and good flavor comes from the pot by itself. Work needs patience, and it needs focus.

Why Did the Magic Pot Burn Twice? A Close Look at the Failures

The magic pot has a fun rule: whatever the cook is thinking, the pot cooks. The little chef failed twice and put the poor pot through it. If we take the two failure scenes apart, we'll see the pot was never the problem.

The first failure: the person left the stove. The pot had just gone on the fire when the little chef ran off to watch TV, leaving only half his mind in the kitchen. What the magic pot read was a cartoon, and out came a black lump. This mistake is common—walking away while cooking to watch TV or scroll a phone. Suppose you cook noodles and spend ten minutes on short videos; the noodles will almost certainly clump into a mess. If the person isn't there and the mind isn't there, the best pot is useless.

The second failure is subtler: the person stood by the stove, but the mind wandered off. The little chef carried homework and a board game in his head, grumbled that the soup was slow, and lifted the lid seven or eight times. His eyes were on the pot; his brain was elsewhere, and the magic pot still read a jumble. Every lifted lid let the heat escape, the water boiled dry, and the bottom scorched. This mistake is restlessness: hands doing one thing, mind on another, with an itch to check progress again and again. Suppose you check the answer key every two lines while doing homework—your homework will scorch like that pot bottom too.

Now look at his successful attempt, where everything was reversed. Three deep breaths before the fire to chase stray thoughts out; steps lined up in his head before starting—tomato first, then egg, then boiling water; and while working, one thing at a time, no peeking under the lid, just listening for the water, adding ingredients when it boiled. The fragrance came out of exactly this focus—the soup smelled so good it drifted into the yard and pulled the neighbors to the kitchen door.

Side by side, patience turns out not to be an empty word—it lives in concrete actions: pause before the fire, line up the steps, then start. Focus isn't an empty word either—it lives in the hands: when you cut, only cut; when you watch the flame, only watch the flame. The magic pot is a mirror showing the cook's mind. What two scorched pots taught the little chef also applies to homework, piano practice, and crafts: first gather your mind back, then carry the work through.
