That Cup of Water Was Placed Before His Mother First

Tuesday evening, I took two bus stops to the home of a boy named Lin Tao. An old apartment building, no elevator, up five flights, and his mother was already waiting at the door. The flat was small. I changed my shoes and set my bag down, and she kept apologizing for the narrow room. On the wall of the living room still hung his award certificates from kindergarten, the corners gone yellow.

The boy called out teacher and, instead of sitting beside me, ran to the kitchen. I thought he was bringing me water, but he carried the cup with both hands and set it down in front of his mother first, pressed the back of his hand to the side of the cup, muttered that it was not too hot, then filled a second cup and set it before me. His mother said, half explaining and half taking it for granted, that he had poured water like this for years, ever since his grandfather fell ill. I said nothing, but I wrote the detail down in my heart.

Sitting down to business, I brought up his school life: he never speaks up in class, keeps his hand down even when he knows the answer, and his homework turns careless some days. His mother sighed and said he is quiet at home too, does not like to talk. His father, holding a teacup, put in a word, how can he be quiet, when asking the doctor about medicine he is more careful than anyone. I asked about daily life, and his mother said his grandfather has chronic bronchitis, and every winter when it flares up, the boy remembers the medicine times and tests the water temperature before handing the cup over. I said, that is the same child as the one in our classroom.

On the bus going back I thought for a long time. At school we keep saying gratitude education and assign homework of saying thank you, yet in this home gratitude had long been something done with the hands rather than said with the mouth. He knows to test the heat with the back of his hand, he knows to set the cup before his mother first. These motions stand firmer than any composition about thanks. What he lacks is not feeling. It is a place where he can be heard.

When his mother walked me out to the stairwell, she said in a low voice that the year the old man fell ill the boy had spoken less, and that once he told her, from now on it will be him who tests the heat of the water for grandpa. I wrote that line into my visit record, and on the last line I wrote, this child carries things in his heart, locked behind his mouth.

Later my home visits changed. Instead of asking only about grades, I began asking what the child does at home. With Lin Tao I started calling on him to answer one question every day, and after a month he raised his hand on his own. At the next home visit I told his mother this, and she stood up to pour water, and the boy reached out and pressed the back of his hand to the cup first. That cup of water taught me that to look at education, one has to look in the right place first.

In All These Years of Home Visits, I Have Never Assigned a Gratitude Composition Again

I have been a homeroom teacher for over a decade, and my home visits have walked into dozens of families. In the early years I trusted compositions. Every term I assigned essays on gratitude, and what came back was a pile of stories about helping mother wash her feet at night, neatly written, impossible to tell true from false. The turn began little by little, starting from that first glance upon entering a door.

In some homes, when I stepped in, the child did not lift his head, eyes nailed to the screen, while his mother smoothed things over, saying the child is introverted. In other homes, the child would call out a greeting and take the bag from my hand. I came to understand that this first glance is not taught by etiquette lessons. It is steeped out of a thousand welcomes over the years inside the family. That glance at the doorway is the most honest answer sheet of family education.

The deepest impression is the boy who poured water for me. He filled one cup first and set it down before his mother, tested the side of the cup with the back of his hand, said it was not hot, then filled a second cup for me. His mother said he has been this way since his grandfather fell ill, and that testing the medicine water for the old man became his job. I sat on the sofa talking with his parents, and the talk was not about grades but about these daily things. His father put it plainly, when an elder at home is sick, everyone lends a hand, and the child sees it and follows. In that moment I recalled another girl from a previous visit, who combed the hair of her grandmother with the exact motions her mother uses on her. The hands of children are learned by copying the hands of adults.

There was one more family, the parents running a small restaurant and coming home only at ten at night. When I arrived, a pot of soup was warming on the stove. The mother said the child heats his own meal every day and never complains. As I left, the boy pressed the elevator button for me, and when the doors closed he was still waving with that soup ladle raised. For such a child, hardship looks like the everyday order of things, and gratitude is not homework for him. It is breathing.

Talking with parents over these years, I summed up one line. How a home treats its elders, how it treats one another, is how the child will treat the world. Homes that preach gratitude with the mouth yet bark at the grandparents across the dinner table teach the child with perfect clarity. The boy with the water cup needs no lesson from me on saying thanks. The sofa, the cup, and the medicine box in his home have already finished the lecture.

So in recent years I no longer assign gratitude compositions. Instead I ask parents to write one small thing the child does at home. I read them aloud to the class without names. Compositions can lie; small things cannot. When a home plants gratitude in the act of pouring water, all the school has to do is say it out loud, so the child knows that the cup of water he poured was seen by someone.
