The Road Under the Snow

Winter is here again. I pull the curtain in the early morning and find the sky the colour of iron, snow slanting down. I like winter, not for the snow, but for a kind of warmth hidden inside the cold. It makes no sound; it only shows itself when you step out to meet it.

On the way to school under snow, the wind bites into my collar. I walk with my head down, feet sinking into the thick snow, my footsteps muffled, as if someone has turned the world down. My scarf is wound up to the bridge of my nose, my breath turns into white mist, and the mist freezes on the edge of the scarf. Both hands stay in my pockets, yet my earlobes still go numb. It was on such a winter morning that I first understood what persistence means: it is not a slogan, but putting one foot in front of the other on a road where almost no one is walking, step by step, until I reach the school gate.

Inside the classroom, the windows are covered with mist, and fine ice flowers grow along the window frames. I press my palms flat on the desk, and the cold of the wood seeps through my gloves. My deskmate presses a hand warmer into my hand and tells me to hold it for a while, then rubs his own hands and opens his textbook. The teacher walks in, and the reading-aloud voices rise in the cold air, the white breath of more than forty people floating together like a quiet steam. Warming hands in the classroom is not only about the hands. The moment something is passed over, the moment everyone reads aloud with shoulders hunched, are how people warm each other in winter.

After school I go home, and the whole family sits around the stove. My mother brings a pot of hot sweet rice balls to the table, my father tells the old story of walking ten kilometres through snow to school as a boy, the firelight moving across every face, and the ice flowers on the window glass melting transparent at one corner. Holding my bowl, I think: the reason I like winter is that it lays cold in the background and pushes every warmth into the foreground - the self I was on the snowy road, the hand warmer passed over in class, this stove tonight.

Winter stays cold. I still leave home before dawn, still put one foot in front of the other in the snow. But I am no longer afraid of it. A person needs a winter: learn to walk through the cold alone, then learn to sit quietly around the fire once you arrive.

Lin Hao by the Stove

If you ask who in our class likes winter most, the answer is Lin Hao. While others long for spring, he longs for snow. I found it strange until the morning a snowfall came and I walked part of the way to school with him.

The snow was half a foot deep, and nobody had trodden the road at the crossing firm. I stepped deep and shallow, my schoolbag swinging on my back. Lin Hao walked ahead, his stride short, his whole footplate settling down as if a map only he could read were buried under the snow road. He glanced back and told me not to walk on tiptoe: press the snow firm, then take the next step. We were three minutes late that day, and his shoes were the only half-dry pair in the class. Only later did I learn that on every snowy day he leaves home twenty minutes early, not for anything grand, just so he would not fall on the road. Persistence, on him, is not gritting teeth; it is repeating the same steadiness a thousand times.

Winter in the classroom begins at the fingertips. Before morning reading, Lin Hao takes three hand warmers out of his bag, presses one to the girl in front whose hands are too cold to write, sets one on the pencil case of the boy by the window, and keeps the third. His own hands are red too, the knuckles swollen like rising dough. Someone asks whether he is not cold. He says claiming he is not would be a lie; once the hands are warm, the writing turns out right. That morning his warmers changed hands twice, and in the end he warmed his own hands around a cup of hot water. The people in the back rows all say that winter was cold, yet nobody handed in homework with numb fingers.

On the Eve of the Lunar New Year his family stewed fish around the stove. I sat in the corner as a guest and listened to him tell everything he had saved up all winter: who righted his fallen bicycle in the snow, how the physics teacher lent his scarf to the student on duty, how his mother filled his hot-water bottle at midnight. The stove fire heated his words one passage at a time. His father put in that walking to school through snow as a boy, and what he feared most was not the cold but walking alone. Lin Hao added a piece of firewood and said that is why he is glad when it snows: the road is full of people, and no one is alone.

Walking home that night, snow was falling again. I copied his way of walking: press the snow firm, then take the next step. I think I understand a little why he likes winter. Cold pushes certain people toward one another and freezes certain truths into unusual clarity - walk steady, pass your hand out, sit by the fire and finish what you have to say.
