The First Ginkgo Leaf on the Playground
October 8, Thursday, sunny with wind. At the long break today, the moment I stepped onto the playground I saw that leaf. It was a ginkgo leaf lying on the red rubber track, yellow as if it had just been dyed. The wind was still blowing, and the other leaves were still holding on to the branches, but this one fell first, as if it could not wait.
I walked over and picked it up. It was the size of a small fan, its edge one wavy curve, and its stalk was still soft, cool when I pinched it. The leaf weighed almost nothing. I held it up against the sun and saw its veins lined up one by one in neat rows, like the ribs of a little fan. Around it lay a few leaves that had fallen long ago, dried and curling at the edges, brownish in colour, but this one was flat and bright yellow, like a sheet of new letter paper just set down.
The cleaning duty had already started sweeping, and the leaves went rustling along behind the broom. I quickly tucked this leaf into my maths textbook, at the page of fraction addition and subtraction. The textbook is thick, just right for pressing it flat. I worried it would pick up pencil marks, then thought, let it - that would mean it sat through lessons with me.
All afternoon my mind stayed with the leaf inside the textbook. I thought: so this is how autumn arrives. Last week we were still hot enough to open the windows, and today the first leaf has fallen. Summer left without a sound, without even saying goodbye; autumn came to take over the shift. The trees on the playground all seem to know this arrangement, dropping one leaf after another, none pushing ahead, none falling behind.
At night I opened the book, took the leaf out to look once more, put it back, and wrote these lines in my diary. I wrote: the first fallen leaf is the business card autumn hands over; it says nothing, yet it tells you everything. There will be a second leaf, then a third; the playground will turn gold little by little, the wind will grow cool little by little, and our coats will come back on one by one. I want to watch this season walk through its days, and record them all in my diary. The autumn of Grade Six - I mean to live it earnestly. After writing these lines I closed the maths textbook, and the leaf stayed inside at the page of fraction addition and subtraction, quiet, as if it too had decided to remain.
The Fallen Leaves Change Class
October 15, Thursday, overcast. Morning reading had not even ended when the students by the window began whispering: the plane trees by the playground are dropping leaves. I craned my neck to look, and sure enough, on the concrete ground lay one plane-tree leaf, bigger than a hand, its edges split into several points, brown threading through its yellow, like a biscuit baked to exactly the right colour.
At the long break the whole class gathered around it. It was the first big fallen leaf of the year on our playground. Zhou Yu squatted down and said it looked like a duck foot; Lin Xiaoxiao said a fan; I said neither - it looks like a map, and its veins are the rivers. While we talked over each other, Wang Hao, our cleaning-duty boy, came by with his broom and said this one belonged to his sweep. We shouted in unison: no, this is the first one, the first one must not be swept. Wang Hao thought for a moment, moved his broom half a metre aside, and said then this one is yours.
I reached out and picked up the plane-tree leaf. It was thicker than a ginkgo leaf, its veins rising one by one, and it felt like the back of the hand of an old person when I touched it. I tucked it into the extracurricular book in my schoolbag, the one about the migration of birds. I thought: fallen leaves and migrating birds are the same thing, both messengers dispatched by the seasons - one flies south, one falls down.
At PE class in the afternoon, our teacher made us run two laps around the playground. On the second lap the wind let the plane-tree leaves down one by one, onto our shoulders, onto our heads. Nobody dodged. After the run everyone looked down at themselves - each of us wearing one or two leaves - and then we all laughed. Wang Hao came out with his broom again, but this time he did not sweep; he stood on the steps and watched. He said it will never get finished, so he might as well wait until they have all fallen.
At night I wrote my feelings in the diary. I wrote: I used to think the change of seasons happened overnight. Today I understand that seasons change class by class, like us moving up a grade. Summer is dismissed first, autumn takes the lesson, and fallen leaves are the signatures they exchange at the handover. The first plane-tree leaf rests inside my extracurricular book, remembering this morning for me. In the days ahead the leaves will fall thicker, the sky will grow colder, and I am not sad, because I know that every leaf coming down is making way for winter, and also saving up the strength to sprout again for spring.
