Rice Waves, Osmanthus Scent, Evening Wind: Autumn Pressed Me Down

When the car turned onto the concrete road at the village entrance, rice stood on both sides. I pulled over, stepped out, and stood on the ridge between the fields for a long time. The grain heads were heavy, all bowing downward. The wind came from far off, and the whole field sank in the same direction, showing the paler gold on the backs of the ears, then rose again and sank again. The sun slanted across it: bright on the crests of the waves, dark in the troughs, one layer pushing another to where I could not see. There was no sound, or only a rustle, and that rustle made everything around it quieter.

At the gate of the yard of my grandmother stood an osmanthus tree. Before I reached the gate, the fragrance arrived first. It was not something I smelled but something I ran into, thick and faintly sweet, sticking to my hair and my clothes, refusing to leave my sleeves hours after I went indoors. The tree was short, its branches tangled, the tiny flowers hidden under the leaves in clusters, as if someone had crushed gold into green velvet. Grandmother spread a bedsheet under the tree and beat the branches with a long bamboo pole; the flowers fell in a soft shower. As she beat, she muttered that she would leave a few branches for the blind old man next door. I helped her gather the blossoms off the sheet. Cupping a handful, I could smell them through the gaps between my fingers.

The cool evening wind came little by little. First the shadows along the threshing floor stretched, then a fine layer of goosebumps rose on my arms, and the heat of the day withdrew completely. I sat on the stone roller at the edge of the floor. The wind came over from the rice fields carrying the smell of husks and dry grass, lifting the hair off my forehead and letting it fall. Far away someone called a child home for dinner, the voice traveling a long way through the wind, in no hurry. The irrigation ditch in the field murmured on, small but unbroken, like autumn counting something under its breath.

All the impatience I had stored up in the city for a year was pressed down that evening by autumn. It did not advise me and did not coax me. It simply laid the rice waves out for me to see, smeared the osmanthus scent over me, and blew the cool wind across me again and again. The next morning, Grandmother stuffed two jars of pickled osmanthus into my trunk. Back in the city, I opened one jar, the fragrance rushed out, and outside my office window the plane tree dropped its first leaf.

Father's Autumn: Three Small Things

The handsomest moments of my father all year happen in the rice fields in October.

On the day the rice turned fully gold, he was down in the field by 5:30. Later I stood on the ridge and watched him: the sickle went down, an armful of rice fell along its curve, stacked behind him, the motion unhurried, with no stroke wasted. As the sun rose the whole field shone gold, and in the middle of that gold he bent, straightened, and bent again, the shadow of his straw hat rocking on his back. By noon he stood up to wipe his sweat, looked across the field, spotted me, and did not call out, only tipped his chin, meaning go home and eat. I did not understand then that a man standing in the grain he had grown could say nothing at all and still seem to have said everything.

During the days the osmanthus bloomed, my father did something utterly unlike him. From somewhere he produced two washed glass jars, set up the ladder in the yard under the osmanthus tree, one hand holding a branch, the other stroking the blossoms off with infinite care, dropping them into the jar, screwing the lid on, setting it on the windowsill. Mother asked what they were for. He said for tea, since she coughed all autumn. Then he walked off, hands behind his back, to check his threshing floor. Mother brewed those two jars through the whole autumn, and kept the last blossoms at the bottom, unable to throw them away. He stroked blossoms again the next year, and every year after. The jars changed several times, but there was always one on the windowsill.

When the cool evening wind rose, my father pedaled the tricycle and took me to the threshing floor. He pedaled fast, the wind poured into my school uniform, and I flinched from the chill. At the floor he opened a corner of the grain pile, grabbed a handful, and let it run through his fingers, listening to the rustle, then nodded. I sat on the pile watching the sky, blue deepening toward ink, the clouds hung low. On the way home he slowed and said one sentence: in two days the cold will settle in, take out the thick quilts and air them. Just that one sentence. The wind scattered his voice along the road.

I have spent autumns in many places since, and I have seen rice fields, osmanthus, and cool evening winds, but none of them felt right. The right autumn sits on the back of the tricycle of my father: his back is a little more bent now, his pedaling rhythm unchanged, the wind coming from the rice fields, the osmanthus scent on the windowsill, year after year, still there.
