Spring Comes in Pieces
March 5, Wednesday, cloudy. On the way to school today I looked at the willow outside my window. Its branches are no longer bare brown; they are dotted with tiny green specks, as if someone had flicked green paint onto them with a brush. I asked Mother what they were, and she said they were willow buds, the babies of leaves. I put my face close. The buds are smaller than rice grains and covered with fine fuzz. I wrote this in my diary. Spring, I think, is hiding inside those tiny green specks.
March 15, Saturday, sunny. A swallow came today! It circled under the eaves of our house and chirped a few times. Mother said it was looking for the old nest of last year. I stood under the eaves and watched for a long time. Its back is ink-black, its belly snow-white, and the scissors on its tail fit just right. It flew very fast; one turn and it was gone. I wrote in my diary: the swallow is back, so spring has properly started. Mother laughed at me and said the swallow arrived long ago; I only just noticed.
March 28, Friday, warm. Something big happened at school today - I took off my thick coat! In the morning I still wore it, but by the second class my back was sweaty. The teacher said the thick coats could be put away, and the whole class unzipped at once, a rustle like a roomful of tiny zippers singing. My coat is blue, with a small pocket on the chest that used to hold milk sweets. The pocket is empty now, but I am glad, because taking off the thick coat means spring has truly arrived.
April 2, Wednesday, sunny. Tonight I flipped back through my diary and counted: the willow buds, the swallow, the thick coat - I wrote down all of them. I used to think spring would arrive suddenly, all at once, on some single day. Now I know it does not work that way. Spring comes in pieces: first one bud, then one bird, then one more piece of clothing taken off. My diary caught them all. Tomorrow I will keep looking. Spring is still hiding in the grass and in the wind, and I will write those down too. I have already decided: when summer comes, I will keep writing one page after another like this, catching every season and letting none slip past me.
Today I Found Spring All Together
April 6, Tuesday, sunny turning warm. Today our Chinese teacher gave us an assignment called Find Spring. She said whoever finds the most will be invited to tell the class tomorrow. The moment the bell rang I pulled Father to the little river, because I felt spring must be hiding there.
The first thing I found was the willows. Every willow by the river had let down long green branches, and when the wind blew they swept the water softly, making little rings on the surface. I caught one branch in my hand. It carried newly opened small leaves, tender green, as if just bathed. I told Father: the willows are letters posted by spring! Father said he memorized a poem as a child, about fine leaves cut out by the scissors of February wind. I said those scissors must be hidden by the willows themselves.
The second thing I found was the swallows. I was staring at the ripples when suddenly a swallow flew over my head, the scissors of its tail just grazing the water and tapping one small round dot on it. It chirped once, a thin little sound. I counted three in total, flying in a line. I jumped for joy and almost stepped into the river. Father grabbed me and said looking at spring is fine, jumping into rivers is not. I noted that down: the swallows came in a queue.
The third find was the most surprising - the thick coat on my own body. On the way home the sun was big and my back was all sweat, my face hot. Father asked if I was hot, and I said yes. So I took off the thick coat right there by the road and carried it in my arms. It still held the smell of the sun. Walking along, I suddenly understood: taking off the thick coat is also finding spring! Spring had been hiding on my own body. I searched everywhere, and it had been on my back the whole time.
At night I lay on the desk writing this diary, with all three springs on the page: willows, swallows, the thick coat. The teacher said those who find much speak to the class, and tomorrow I will raise my hand first. I also want to tell my classmates that spring does not need searching across the whole world - it is on the way home from school, if only you look up. Oh, and tomorrow I am wearing my thin coat to school, because spring is already on me.
