The Broom and the Dustpan Are Best Friends

October fourteenth, Tuesday, sunny.

Today it was the turn of our group for class duty, and I was paired with Liu Xiaoman. She sweeps, I hold the dustpan. When the teacher handed her the broom, she winked at me, meaning the two of us had long ago worked this out.

Sweeping is fun in her hands. The broom moves like a big comb, from under the desks by the window all the way to the front of the platform. I bend over and follow with the dustpan in both hands. She sweeps up a heap of paper bits and pencil shavings, I push the pan forward, she scoops, and everything falls in. The two of us need no words: she moves left, I move left; she steps back, I step back. My deskmate said we looked like two players passing a ball on television.

When she reached the last row, a hair got caught in the broom. She squatted down and wound it out with her fingers while I held the broom steady for her. Afterward her hands were dusty, and she blew air on them, then blew air at me, and I blew air back, and we squatted on the floor in a laughing heap. Then we hurried to clean the blackboard. She was not tall enough for the top line of writing, so she reached up while standing on my shadow. She reached it and shouted my name so loudly that the class next door could hear.

After the blackboard she wiped the podium, and I picked up the pieces of chalk one by one and put them back in the box: half a red one, a whole white one, and one only the length of a fingernail. She said this last one should be kept for the teacher to write the key points, and I said all right, and set it in the front row of the box. The podium was wiped until the original color of the wood showed, and there was a small hole in its corner, which I filled with chalk dust.

After the work we went to wash our hands. She had a white line of chalk on her sleeve, and I patted it off for her, and she patted the dust off my shoulder. The desks of the classroom were pulled straight by us, and by the windowsill the broom and the dustpan leaned against each other.

After school we walked home together. She walked along the curb with her arms open like a tightrope walker. I climbed up too, one meter apart, neither touching the other, comparing whose shadow was longer. The sun was good today, and our shadows stretched all the way to the telephone pole. She said our group is on duty again tomorrow. I said that is perfect, because the broom and the dustpan are best friends, and so are we.

What a happy day. Cleaning duty is not tiring at all, because best friends do it together.

The Smileys on the Window Glass

October twenty-first, Tuesday, clear then cloudy.

Our group is on duty again today, and this time the job is wiping desks and glass. I am paired with Wang Mengtong. She holds the spray bottle, I hold the cloth. Before we started we made a rule: she sprays three times, I wipe once, and whoever breaks the rule buys a popsicle at the little shop after school.

Wang Mengtong loves spraying. The squeeze of her bottle keeps a rhythm, pat, pat, pat. I chase behind her, and my cloth sweeps across the desk in an arc. The desks turn from gray to bright, row after row, as if they just came out of a factory. When we finished the fourth row, the class monitor came to inspect. He bent down to look and said not a speck of dust was left, then gave us a thumbs up. Wang Mengtong aimed the bottle at him, he jumped away, and everybody laughed.

The glass is the most fun. She sprays water on it, and I wipe it clean from one corner. The water marks do not dry right away. She draws a smiley with her finger in the water mark on my side, and I draw one on her side. The two smileys face each other through the glass. The teacher came to look and did not scold us. She said the two smileys make the window look like it is smiling. Wang Mengtong stuck her tongue out at me, and I wiped the smiley away with the corner of my cloth, but in fact I left one small one that only the two of us can see.

When we finished, the desks were bright enough to reflect a face. I bent close to my desk, and the face in the desk looked round and red. Wang Mengtong bent close too, and the two faces in the two desks touched each other. We laughed and stood up straight, then went to the sink to rinse our cloths. The water in the bucket turned gray, and when we wrung the cloths, water flew onto the sleeves of each other. We each blamed the other, and neither was truly angry. When pouring the dirty water, we carried the bucket to the waste pool by the back door. A green layer of moss grew on the tiles at the edge of the pool. She tiptoed around it, and I copied her, and the two of us wobbled across like walking a balance beam, and poured the water out.

Walking home, we counted the steps from the school gate to our crossing. At one hundred and eight we arrived at the same time. She said next time we should count by jumping, and I said all right. The setting sun was behind us, and the glass of the teaching building held one streak of orange light. I thought of the two smileys we had drawn. I do not know whether they are still on the glass. They have probably dried away, but I remember them.

What a happy day. Next time we are on duty, I hope I am paired with Wang Mengtong again.
