Two Bicycles Meeting on a Line Segment

November third, Tuesday, sunny.

Today there was one travel problem in the math homework that I could not do. Two places are 48 kilometers apart. Person A and person B set out at the same time on bicycles toward each other; person A rides 14 kilometers an hour, person B rides 10 kilometers an hour. After how many hours do they meet? I copied the problem three times and drew it three times, and the more I drew the more muddled I became, with the meeting point always in the wrong place. I stared at the workbook, and the words swam before my eyes, and I left a row of tooth marks in my eraser without noticing.

When the bell rang for after school, Zhou Yuexiang came to my desk with her schoolbag on her back. She put her head over and looked for a while, then tore a long strip from her scratch paper, drew a long horizontal line, marked the two ends A and B, and wrote 48 above the line. You are this bicycle, and I am that one, she said, pressing the tips of two pencils on the two ends of the line. We start at the same time. The two pencil tips moved toward each other and met at one point. Look, the distance you ride plus the distance I ride is exactly the whole line, 48 kilometers. In a flash I understood. The two riders were not fighting over the road; together they were sharing this line.

She pushed the scratch paper in front of me and asked me to explain it once in my own words. When I got stuck at one place, she was not impatient at all. She only pointed at the line graph with her pencil and helped me start again. When I finished, she drew a smiley face in the corner of my notebook and said that next time I meet a travel problem I should draw the line myself.

The next day during the long break she tested me again with a changed version, in which the two riders start one hour apart. I drew the line, circled the one hour that was already ridden, and solved it in one go. She gave me a thumbs up, and I stood there holding the scratch paper and grinning.

The unit test on Friday really had a problem of this kind. I first drew a line graph, then set up the equation, and after finishing I put the answer back to check it. When the papers came back, I had 92 points. Last month I only had 78. At home I showed the paper to my mother, and she said my face was shining with joy.

Writing this diary I want to thank Zhou Yuexiang. She said next she will teach me work problems, and I said I will teach her English words in return. We hooked little fingers, very seriously. Helping each other is the best.

The Red Pen and the Blue Pen in the Mistake Notebook

November tenth, Tuesday, cloudy.

The math paper came back today, 76 points, and I got the third problem from the end wrong again. It was another fraction word problem. Last time I missed the part about more than and less than, and this time I missed who is a fraction of whom. I pushed the paper into my desk pocket and did not want my deskmate to see it.

Ma Yinuo sits beside me and always stays near the top in math. She saw me hide the paper and pulled it straight out of the pocket. She said do not hide it, because if you hide it, it will be wrong again tomorrow. She took a blue notebook out of her bag with the words mistake notebook on the cover, and said I could copy half of hers, and that I should get one red pen and one blue pen. I did not understand why I needed two pens. She put the blue one into my hand and said that while she explains, I write in blue, and she does not write at all.

She has one habit when explaining problems: she loves to use examples about buying oranges. For this problem, in which the boys are one third more than the girls, she said to think of the girls as one basket of oranges, and the boys as this basket with one third of a basket added. She asked where the third basket comes from. I said it comes out of the basket of the girls. She touched the line with her pen tip and said exactly, the girls are the unit one. That evening I redid all three problems I had missed, and under every who I drew a circle. The answers were in red pen and the thinking was in blue pen, so each page looked half red and half blue, like two pieces of patchwork.

Every day before school ended she quizzed me on two problems. When I got one wrong she did not laugh at me. She only turned back to the earlier page and let me look at the basket of oranges she had drawn then. One problem I got wrong two days in a row. On the third day she changed the example to buying watermelon, and I solved it on the spot. On the last page of the mistake notebook we wrote: if oranges do not work, switch to watermelon.

In the midterm exam I got 91 in math, my first time above 90 since Grade six. I finished the last word problem and went back to check, circling the word for than. Ma Yinuo looked at my paper and copied the one blank I missed into her own notebook, saying she also has to improve.

My mistake notebook is now half full. Every page is half red and half blue. I think when this notebook is full, my math will stop dragging the class behind. Thank you, Ma Yinuo, and thank you to basket after basket of oranges.
