She Ran the Last Lap of the 800 Meters With Me

October ninth, Thursday, sunny.

In P.E. class we ran the 800 meter test. On the second lap my throat felt stuffed with cotton, my legs would not lift, and I walked across the finish line. My time did not pass. The teacher said there would be a make-up test, and I leaned on the railing and did not want to say a word. Jiang Lu handed me half a bottle of water and said that starting today she would run with me every evening, and by the make-up test it would surely be enough.

On the first evening the field held only the two of us. She said no timing yet, just four laps, and walking was allowed too. The first lap went all right. On the second I started looking for her. She always dropped back to half a step on my right side and said to run by listening to her footsteps, not counting the laps left but counting the steps we take. So the two of us counted steps all the way. When we passed six hundred the count got mixed up, and we started over, and somehow it stopped feeling tiring.

The next day she brought a whistle, saying her father used it when running. At every curve she blew it once, one short blast, like keeping accounts of the laps. Even the old man who sells soda by the field came to know us, and when he saw her he called out and asked how many laps today.

The third evening was the hardest. Past the halfway point of the second lap my legs stopped obeying me again, and I waved at her to go ahead. She did not go. She dropped back beside me, tugged my sleeve, and said this is the last lap, I am with you, watch the back of my head, do not look at the finish line. I stared at her ponytail swinging left and right, followed the sound of her footsteps, and somehow ran the whole way. She stopped before I crossed the line, bent over with her hands on her knees, gasping. When she finished gasping she flashed me a sign.

The make-up test was set for Friday. At the starting shot I did as Jiang Lu taught me: hold the pace for the first one and a half laps, then lift my head on the last lap and look for people. She stood outside the finish line holding up her phone to show me the time, two minutes fifty eight seconds, a pass. I braced my hands on my knees and laughed, and she laughed even louder than I did.

On the walk home the setting sun stretched our shadows very long, so long that they joined and could not be told apart. She said we would train again tomorrow, this time for pull-ups. I said all right, since the field in the evening is always there.

I used to think running was a one-person thing: the gasping, the sore legs, the wish to give up, all of it carried alone. These four evenings changed my mind. With someone running beside you, the last lap really is different. When our shadows join together, even the road home becomes a little shorter.

One More Lap on the Evening Field

October sixteenth, Thursday, clear then cloudy.

A month ago Gao Yan and I made a decision: run on the school field every evening, and nobody may make excuses. The rule was his. Whoever cannot go on may shout one more lap, and after shouting that lap must truly be run, with no second shout allowed. On the first day I shouted after three laps. He laughed and said we were still far from the middle count. After that lap I ran half a lap more before stopping.

Running alone lasts three days; running together lasts a month. That is what Gao Yan said, and I believe it. There were a few cold days in between, with wind pouring into my collar. I hesitated at the gate of the field, and he was already on the track, waving at me. I ran over. On the first lap neither of us talked; on the second lap the words came thick, about the math homework, the new dishes in the canteen, which two students in the class next door had quarreled. Somewhere in the running our bodies warmed up, and the wind stopped pouring into our collars.

The hardest stretch came around the twentieth day, when we both hit a plateau and each timed lap grew slower than the last. Gao Yan suggested switching to interval running, fast on the straights and slow on the curves. After the first set I held my waist and nearly retched. He handed me water and patted my back, saying everyone meets the plateau, and once you get through it the line goes up. When he said that he sounded exactly like our biology teacher. I copied his tone, and the two of us collapsed laughing by the track.

Tonight we reached eight laps. Afterward we sat on the steps of the stand. The setting sun dyed the plastic track orange, and the white lines lit up one by one. Far away someone was flying a kite, with the red sky behind it. Gao Yan took out his phone to record the count, eight laps, one more than last week. He drew a check mark after the number and said tomorrow, nine laps.

I did the math. From two laps to eight laps took us thirty-one evenings, with not one day missed. Before this I never stuck at anything for long: piano, roller skating, copybook practice. This time is different, because there has always been a sound of footsteps beside me. I told Gao Yan we would keep running until we graduate from Grade nine. He said it is a deal, held out his little finger, and then we slapped palms instead, which is more grown-up than hooking fingers.

On the way back to the dormitory the sky was fully dark, and the street lamps stepped on our shadows. My legs were sore, and my heart was steady. The word persistence, it turns out, can be carried by two people together.
