The Web Woven Overnight

Late at night, I had just read the part where Charlotte weaves the words onto her web. My mother came to tell me to sleep, but I could not put the book down. A spider works through the night to save a little pig, and by dawn a shining word appears on the web.

The scene I remember best is Charlotte weaving words through one whole night. She was already weak, yet she climbed onto the web again in the deep night, spinning thread after thread. Wilbur asked her to rest, but she said the days left for her were not many. My eyes grew hot at this. What is a friend? A friend is one who spends the time of their own life on your trouble.

Charlotte dies at the county fair, leaving only an egg sac. Wilbur watches over the egg sac day and night and carries it back home. He could not save his friend, yet he did to the end what a friend should do. The book says that every spring he goes to watch the little spiders settle onto their webs, and that steady remembrance weighs more than any words.

I thought of my best friend Xiao Lin. Last term she lent me her favorite notebook, and I lost it. I was too afraid to tell her, and I lied that I had never borrowed it. She later found the notebook under my desk at home. For one whole week we did not speak. At break, the other girls went to the little shop, and the two of us sat at our own seats.

She had once slipped a note into my desk drawer saying it was fine. I had once wanted to say sorry. Neither of us spoke, and the misunderstanding grew like a rolling snowball. We made up after a month, yet a thin wall stood between us. I still regret it. In that one week, if even one person had woven the words out the way Charlotte did, the wall would never have risen.

Charlotte would not do this. She would say a thing at once and finish what must be done in one night. Friendship cannot be left alone and expected to stay. If no one tends it, dust gathers on it, and it may even break.

Now, when something happens with a friend, I plan to speak first. If I borrow a thing, I return it whole; if I make a mistake, I say sorry on the same day. I want to be like Charlotte, doing small things for a friend. And I want to be like Wilbur, watching over friendship to the end.

Footprints on the Meadow

When I read the part where Clara takes her first step on the grass of the Alpine meadow, I held my breath, as if the foot reaching out were my own.

The scene I remember best happens in Frankfurt. Every day Heidi pushes the wheelchair of Clara out onto the grass and tells her about the hay, the goats, and the grasshoppers. Clara cannot walk, yet she masters her fear and edges forward bit by bit, holding the handle of the wheelchair. The doctor had said the mountain air and the goat milk would help. Sure enough, on the meadow in front of the hut, Clara stands up and takes that step. Her grandmother stands beside her, wiping her eyes with excitement.

What moves me most is not the miracle but the daily company. Heidi never treats Clara as some fragile thing to be pitied. She simply takes her out every day, talks with her, and waits for her. One day shows nothing; one hundred days make a road. Grandmother says the heart of Heidi is like the sun on the Alpine, shining without picking its place. I think that is perfectly true. After that Clara comes to the Alpine every day, and the two girls herd the goats together and drink the goat milk together, their laughter rolling from one end of the slope to the other.

I thought of the wall newspaper Xiao Yue and I made together. She erased the border I had drawn and redrew it, saying my colors did not match. I grew angry and did not speak to her for two weeks. Only later did I learn that she stayed after school to redo the whole wall, and that she bought new colored chalk with her own pocket money. Our newspaper won second prize for the grade, and the certificate hung on the back wall of the classroom. The two of us stood under it, neither speaking first.

If Heidi met such a thing, she would clear the air on the spot, and she would go and make peace the same day. I kept it inside, and the crack between us only grew wider. It took our class monitor Zhou Rui to bridge us before the two of us spoke again.

Friendship is like the walking practice of Clara. Skip it, and it grows stiff; practice step by step, and you can stand. A bond between people is not tied once and left forever. It must be tied tight again every day.

Next time we work as a group, I will say a thing on the spot if something feels wrong. If a friend falls, I will not only shout encouragement. I will keep company with them for a stretch each day, the way Heidi kept company with Clara. Friendship needs care from the heart, and company is the most solid form of that care.
