Today I Was the Mother Hen
October 30, Friday, sunny.
The moment the bell for the end of class rang today, I put my pencil away and waited in my seat for the teacher to dismiss us. The second she said class is over, I rushed out first. The end-of-class bell is the sound our whole class loves best. When it rings, the corridors fill with people, the stairway becomes a lively river, and we flow down the river to the playground.
Today we played eagle catches chicks. We started with rock-paper-scissors, I won twice, and they made me the mother hen. I had always been a chick before, standing in the middle of the line, seeing nothing but the schoolbag of Zhou Hang shaking in front of me. Today I stood at the very front and found for the first time that the job of the hen is not easy at all. The eagle was Li Duoduo, tall, his eyes fixed on our long tail at the end of the line. I spread both arms. When he swung left, I blocked left; when he swung right, I blocked right. My arms were like a door, and behind the door stood my chicks.
The scariest moment came when Li Duoduo suddenly ran two steps left and then whipped back to pounce on the right. I almost fell from being dizzy, but I still got there and stopped him with my arms. Chen Xiaoman at the tail screamed in fright, and the chicks behind bumped into one another, a string of sugared haws that could shout. We laughed until our stomachs hurt. The face of Li Duoduo turned red, and he caught no one the whole time.
A small thing also happened halfway through. Xu Le fell down and scraped his knee a little. He got up by himself, dusted off the dirt, said it was nothing, and stood back in the line as a chick. We gathered around to look, and he said the hen still owed him one protection. Everyone laughed, we lined up again, and kept playing. The end-of-class bell gave us ten minutes, and we split them into three rounds, playing round by round, no one willing to say let us go back first.
When the bell for the start of class rang, we did not want to stop. Li Duoduo said he would be the hen next time and asked who would be the eagle. We said okay and walked back. The start-of-class bell is a sound we like less, but when it rang today my heart was full. I was a hen once, and I protected every chick. On the way back to the classroom my arms were still raised, and I nearly hit the door frame. Today was truly a happy day, and I want to write it down.
The Eagle Caught Me, and I Was Still Happy
October 28, Wednesday, cloudy.
The end-of-class bell rang faster than usual today. I guess the music teacher let us go one minute early. Anyway, once the bell rang, everyone from Class Two of Grade Four poured out of the classroom like water, all rushing to our usual corner of the playground. Our game is still eagle catches chicks. We play it every break, and we never get tired of it.
Today I stood at the very end of the line, as the tail. Being the tail is the most exciting part, because the eagle always pounces on the tail in the end. The mother hen was Wang Xiaoyu, guarding seriously with her arms stretched straight. The eagle was Zhao Yifan. He never pounced directly. First he pretended to go left to swing the line over, then he cut to the right. I watched his arm reach toward me. I wanted to run, but a tail cannot swing easily, and the kid behind me was still pulling me back. In that one second he grabbed my sleeve. The whole class shouted: caught! Caught! I shouted back: I will be the eagle! I will be the eagle!
By our rule, whoever gets caught becomes the eagle for the next round. When I was the eagle, I felt shy about pouncing at first and only made pretend moves. Wang Xiaoyu shielded the chicks, and seeing my moves they deliberately swung the tail right in front of my face to tease me. I got fired up, copied the trick of Zhao Yifan, swung left two steps, cut back, and grabbed Liu Xiaoxiao at the tail. She screamed and laughed, laughing louder than any chick ever had. So being the eagle is this fun. I did not know that when I was a chick.
In the second round we changed the formation. The hen put two big kids in the middle of the line, and the tail became the girl Zhang Tiantian. I pounced three times and failed, and in the end I tricked Wang Xiaoyu with a fake move and caught Zhou Hang, the second from last. When I caught him, Zhou Hang shouted that it was unfair, saying his shoelace had come undone and it should not count. We argued around him for a long while, and finally took a vote: six to two, it counted. Zhou Hang became the eagle unconvinced, muttering under his breath, yet he ran faster than anyone.
When the start-of-class bell rang, we still stood in a circle on the playground, refusing to scatter. Zhao Yifan shouted: same time tomorrow! We all shouted: yes! So loud that the class next door turned to look. On the way back I kept thinking: I was the one caught today, so why was I not upset at all, happier than on any other day? Writing my diary to this point, I want to tell one honest truth: in eagle catches chicks, even getting caught is happy, because when the bell rings, we have promised tomorrow again.
