Saying That Thank You Out Loud
When the sun climbs onto the windowsill, I open my eyes, and the first words I want to say out loud are thank you to the kitchen where the spatula is singing.
The smile of my mother is like a little sun, pinned to the strap of my schoolbag, warming me all the way to the school gate.
The class bell rings, and the chalk of my teacher dances on the blackboard, dancing out letters and dancing out the white at her temples. Thank you, teacher.
The half eraser my deskmate pushes over, the second my classmate hands me the water bottle, I look into their eyes and say thank you, and I see a smile bloom at the corner of their eyes.
It rains after school. My father crouches down and says climb on my back. I hold his neck tight, and that hug is warmer than a roof.
The hands of my grandmother crack little openings in winter, and the palm-leaf fan of my grandfather waved through a whole summer. I walk over and say thank you for loving me, then hold them in a tight hug.
Once I hid my thank you in my heart and felt too shy to say it. The day I spoke it out loud, the person who heard it smiled, and my heart stayed bright all the way home.
Thank you is a tiny seed. Speak it out loud, and it falls into the heart of another person and sprouts a smile.
Thank you is a small flame. Speak it out loud, and it travels from my lips to your face and lights up two dimples.
Thank you is a pair of little wings. Speak it out loud, and everyone who hears it can fly up just a little.
Now every morning I say thank you to my mother, and her smile is brighter than the morning light.
After every class I say thank you to my teacher, and the tiredness in her eyes flies away.
Every time I get home I say thank you to my mother and father, then open my arms and give them a big hug.
A hug is short, only a few seconds. A hug is long, long enough to keep me warm the whole day.
A hug is small, small enough to hold only an embrace. A hug is big, big enough to hold a whole family.
Say the thank you out loud, and let the smile in our mouths bloom into the smile on the face of another person.
Say the thank you out loud, and let the hug in our arms warm every ordinary day.
Thank you, mother. Thank you, father. Thank you, teacher. Thank you, everyone who smiled at me.
I plant the two words of thank you in today, water them with a smile, and let them grow into one big hug.
The Ones Who Heard Thank You
I am a child. But today, I want to speak for the grown-ups who heard the thank yous.
In the morning, a child lifts his face and says to me: Mother, thank you for making breakfast. The spoon in my hand suddenly turns light, and my heart feels like a quilt left out in the sun.
He does not know that when a mother hears thank you, the corners of her mouth curl up by themselves, and no hand can press them down.
Between classes, a child looks into my eyes and says: Teacher, thank you for teaching me. My chalk-dusted fingers stop aching all at once, and the words on the blackboard seem to behave better.
He does not know that when a teacher hears thank you, she hides a smile behind her glasses and lets it run out only after she turns around.
At the school gate, a child takes off my cap and bows: Sir, thank you for opening the door. I have stood at this gate for thirty years, and for the first time the door handle feels warm.
He does not know that when a gatekeeper hears thank you, he straightens his back straighter than on flag-raising day.
On the bus, a child turns back before getting off and calls out: Driver, thank you for stopping so steadily. I have held a steering wheel for twenty years, and for the first time I want to remember this brake for life.
He does not know that when a driver hears thank you, the eyes in his mirror bend into two little bridges.
After school, that child runs home, opens his arms and hugs me: Mother, today I said thank you to so many people. I squat down and hold him tight, holding as if all the tiredness of the day had taken a holiday.
Child, you do not know how wonderful you are. Every thank you you spoke turned into a smile and landed on the face of a grown-up.
Every thank you you spoke turned into a hug that moved into our hearts and stayed the whole day long.
We are the grown-ups: mothers, teachers, uncles at the gate, drivers. We are too shy to keep saying thank you, but we have always been waiting for yours.
Your thank you is small, small as a candy; we hold it in our mouths, sweet until after work, sweet until we get home.
Your smile is light, light as a cloud; we carry it in our palms, lifting it over a whole day of tiredness.
Your hug is short, short as a bird call; we keep it in our hearts, and it lasts through a whole winter.
So child, do not hide your thank you. Every time you say it, some grown-up secretly rejoices once.
Every time you say it, some grown-up hands a smile to the next person, and carries a hug home to his own child.
You see, when one thank you is spoken out loud, the smiles and hugs of the whole world make one more round.
