My Pocket Is Full of Thank You

Dear teachers, dear classmates: hello everyone! I am Wang Xiaoman from Class Two, Grade Three. Today my speech topic is: my pocket is full of thank you.

I have a little secret. Since second grade, I have been writing down the good things people do to me on small slips of paper, keeping them in my pocket, and counting them on weekends. Now my pocket already holds forty-seven slips. Today I picked the two most important ones to tell you about.

The first slip reads: rainy night. One evening last summer, I suddenly had a high fever, and the rain outside poured like water being tipped over. Dad was away on a business trip, so Mom picked me up on her back all by herself and ran to the clinic. She put the raincoat on me but got soaked herself. At the clinic, her hair stuck to her face, and water dripped from her chin. That night she watched by my bed and took my temperature once every hour. When I woke up groggily, I always saw her bright eyes fixed on me. The next day my fever broke, and her eyes were full of red streaks.

The second slip reads: red stars. When I first entered third grade, my handwriting was crooked, as if it had been drinking. Teacher Li did not scold me. She held my hand and wrote stroke by stroke for a whole page together. Later red stars appeared in my homework book: one, two, ten. I was afraid to raise my hand in class, so Teacher Li nodded at me every day, as if saying, just try. Now I have raised my hand fourteen times, and before each time, I can feel her nod.

Classmates, the rain on Mom back and the warmth of Teacher Li hand are things that grew up alongside us. As we get taller day by day, they bend down little by little and add white hairs. So today, I want to say the words I have saved up for a long time: Mom, thank you for carrying me to the clinic, thank you for the porridge every night. Teacher Li, thank you for holding my hand to write, thank you for nodding at me every day.

I also want to call on everyone to do two things. Thing one: go home and say thank you out loud, do not be shy, say it big. Thing two: do one small deed in return: rub Mom back, wipe the blackboard once for the teacher, write your homework a little neater so more red stars appear. Thanks should be said with the mouth and done with the hands.

Classmates, keep thank you in your pocket and gratitude in your heart, and we will grow straight like little saplings in the love around us. Thank you for growing up with me; I will grow old slowly with you too.

My speech is over. Thank you, everyone!

Two Report Cards

Dear teachers and students: hello everyone! I am Chen Duo from Class One, Grade Four. Today my speech topic is: two report cards.

Students, everyone has seen report cards. But have you ever seen a report card written for your mom and dad and your teachers? Today I want to hand in my two report cards in front of everyone.

The first one is for my father. My father repairs bicycles, and his hands always carry ink-black grease that will not wash off. Every morning he takes me to school on that old electric bike, and in winter he lets me hide behind his arms to block the wind. In second grade I wanted to learn to ride a bicycle, so he held the back seat and chased around the neighborhood square with me for dozens of laps, until his shirt was soaked through. The day I learned to ride, he laughed like a child. Yet the harshest thing I ever said to him was: do not come to school wearing that outfit, it is embarrassing. Even now, remembering it makes my chest ache. So on this report card, I give my father one hundred and twenty points, and the extra twenty points are to make up for that embarrassing apology.

The second report card is for our head teacher, Teacher Zhang. Last term there was one problem I just could not learn. Teacher Zhang called me to the office, and when she explained it the third time, I was so frustrated I cried, yet she smiled and said, for the fourth time I will tell it as a story. After school that day, only the two of us were left in the office. Teacher Zhang also teaches us how to be people. When classmates quarrel, she does not scold. She makes each side name three good points of the other, and nobody may leave until they can say them. Later we made up and even became good friends. She always says: good grades are a skill, but a good heart is a bigger skill.

Students, these two report cards are filled with nothing but thank you. Thank you, Dad, your grease-black hands hold up our family; I will never again call you embarrassing. On the day you come to the parents meeting in your work clothes, I will hold your hand. Thank you, Teacher Zhang, for the story of the fourth try, and for teaching us to speak the good points of others.

I also want to turn these two report cards into action. From today on, I set three rules for myself: pack my own schoolbag so parents never check it for me again; listen carefully in class so teachers never have to explain a problem a fourth time; when classmates quarrel, I will name their good points first. Students, gratitude cannot stay on paper; it must be written into the days.

Finally, please allow me to read these two report cards aloud to all the parents and teachers in the school: you grew up with me, and I will make you proud. These one hundred and twenty points are yours to keep.

My speech is over. Thank you, everyone!
