An Action List Inside My Pencil Case
On Monday math class, I was stuck on the same equation problem for twelve minutes. My deskmate Zhou Yang pushed his eraser and scratch paper over to me, tapping the problem with his pencil tip and saying that the number on the left changes sign when it moves to the right. He explained fast, his pencil running two lines across the paper. I followed his steps and got the right answer. I whispered thank you. He took the paper back and kept listening to the lesson, as if those two minutes had never happened.
On the way home I kept thinking about it. He spent two minutes helping me, and I did nothing beyond saying thanks. What good does a bare thank you do? By the next day everyone would forget. When I got home I tore half a sheet of homework paper, wrote three lines on it, and stuck it inside the lid of my pencil case: bring Zhou Yang one candy every day; when his scratch paper runs out, buy him a new pad with my pocket money; when he asks a question, never say I do not know either. I named it my gratitude action list.
The first two days were easy; the candy sat in the side pocket of my schoolbag. On the third day I forgot. On the fourth day the candy ran out and I did not buy more. On Friday Zhou Yang came with a calculation problem while I was reading a comic book, and I blurted out that I did not understand it either. I regretted the words the moment they left my mouth. That night I took the list off, stuck it back neatly, and added one line at the bottom: when you fail, think of that equation problem.
Since then the list has been replaced three times. The candy went from one a day to one a week, the scratch paper was bought twice, and I stopped saying I do not know when Zhou Yang asks. If I cannot explain it, we open the book and find a worked example together. He probably thought I had simply become nicer, and never asked. During the week before the midterm review, he helped me memorize formulas for five days, quizzing me before school ended each afternoon, one mistake means repeating it the next day. I asked him why he bothered. He said it was on his way anyway. I know his seat is right across from mine.
I removed the last list from my pencil case last week and pressed it into my diary. Now, whenever someone helps me, I still tear off half a sheet of paper and write three things I can do for them, then stick it up. The items are small: one candy, one pad of paper, one patient explanation. But as I keep doing them, I feel I deserve that thank you. That is my biggest lesson this term: gratitude turned from a sentence into a list, and then into a habit.
My Gratitude Weekly Journal: From Being Supported to Supporting Others
October 12. My essays came back today, and mine was covered in red pen. Teacher Zhao did not just write the four words poor expression the way others do. Beside every paragraph she wrote a short model rewrite, and at the end she added: your observation is good, it is a pity the sentences could not keep up with your eyes. After school she called me into the corridor, held up my notebook, and asked paragraph by paragraph: what did you hear at that moment? Write down exactly what you heard. She stayed with me while I rewrote the third paragraph, and the evening study bell rang before we finished.
October 19. This week I started a gratitude journal. Our homeroom teacher said reflections should record what you actually did, not empty words. On the first page I wrote down the line from Teacher Zhao about sentences and eyes, and also the plan I had made: my deskmate Lin Xiaoman always fails dictation. Her parents run a night market stall, and nobody reads the words to her at home. Every Tuesday and Thursday after school, I will read the unit vocabulary to her twice, check the answers with her, and re-read the wrong ones the next day. I wrote the plan in my journal, as if signing a promise.
November 2. Three weeks in, and I made a mess of it. Last Thursday I was in a hurry to play basketball and read the words far too fast; Xiaoman got half of them wrong. She said nothing, she just closed her notebook. On Saturday I scolded myself in the journal and rearranged the time: words first, basketball second, no court until the reading is done. This week we checked thirty-seven words, and she missed only four, half of last week.
November 30. Today in dictation Xiaoman missed two words, and when the teacher reached the hardest one she laughed first. After school she showed me her vocabulary cards; on the back she had drawn the two of us, one holding a book up, one covering an ear. She said next month her mother will close the stall early and treat me to fried skewers. I wrote in my journal: I started this to repay Teacher Zhao, and somehow it turned into Xiaoman and me repaying each other.
December 14. Eleven weeks now. I was sick for two days in the middle, and Xiaoman copied the words herself and left them at the corner of my desk, waiting until I recovered so I could finish reading them. Today Teacher Zhao checked essays in class and read a paragraph from Xiaoman as a model. While she read, she glanced toward our seats. On the last page of my journal I wrote my reflection: a person who was once guided along a stretch of road after school never forgets that hand. What I did falls far short of that evening she gave me, but I kept it up, just as she once asked of me: let the sentences catch up with the eyes, and let actions catch up with thank you.
