The Electric Bike That Went My Way

I used to think growing up was something for adults and had nothing to do with me, until one Monday morning I discovered that maturity grows on a person the way mushrooms grow after rain.

That day I was riding my bicycle to school. When I turned into the lane, my front wheel dropped straight into a puddle. I fell onto the roadside, my bag strap slid down to my elbow, my knee was scraped, and the chain came off. I squatted there, about to be late, with tears spinning in my eyes.

The old man from the repair shop heard the noise and ran out, apron still on. One hand held my bike, the other pinched the chain and clicked it back in twice, then wiped the mud off the front wheel with a rag. He said: ride slowly, the road is slippery. I stood up, dusted myself off, and said thank you, grandpa. He waved and went back to patching his tire.

I rode a dozen meters and suddenly looked back. He was still standing at the doorway watching me, and only bent back to his unfinished work after he saw me riding steadily. My heart turned sour in that moment. I remembered that my mother does the same when she walks me to school: she always watches until I pass the school gate. So this is what it feels like to be cared for.

That day I said thank you three more times inside my heart. On the second one I noticed that saying it only inside does not seem enough. You have to do something.

The change began after school. Passing the repair shop, I went in and said thank you again, carefully, looking into his eyes. The old man froze for a second, then smiled so hard every wrinkle on his face squeezed together, and he said: this kid has grown up.

After that I did three small things. First, I never threw trash into the lane again, because the old man sweeps that lane every morning. Second, in winter I keep a baked sweet potato in my pocket and hand it to him as I pass, and his hand is warm when he takes it too. Third, I ride my bicycle much slower and no longer race through the lane, because I know there is a man there who always wants to run out and help.

My mother said I changed around then: I pack my own schoolbag and straighten the slippers of my father. I am not sure that counts as maturity. I only know that after receiving one kindness from someone, your heart carries a little stove inside, and you have to do something to deserve that warmth.

This is what gratitude brought me. It did not turn me into another person. It only made me start noticing the people who steadied my bike, held the door for me, and watched until I rode steadily before turning away. Once you notice them, a person seems to grow a little more mature all by itself.

The Hand Reached Out Beside the Track

On the day of the sports meet I signed up for the 800 meters. I am not really a good runner; I just wanted to score a point for my class.

Coming around the bend on the second lap, my foot caught, and I fell onto the edge of the track. My palm was scraped, and my trousers wore a hole at the knee. Some people in the stands shouted go for it, and some whispered that it was over. I sat on the ground, my ears buzzing, wanting only to leave the track.

Then a hand reached out in front of me. It was Lin Xiaoman, with whom I exchange barely three sentences on ordinary days. He is quiet, and even his walking carries wind. He said nothing at first, just pulled my arm up, patted the dust off my knee, and then said: run slowly, I will keep you company.

And he really stayed beside me, neither fast nor slow, exactly the pace my limping could keep up with. On the last two hundred meters we were the last pair in the whole stadium, yet every classmate in the stands was shouting our names. The moment I crossed the line I was too out of breath to speak and could only nod at him hard.

At night, lying in bed, I turned the same thought over and over: why was Lin Xiaoman willing to run with me? I remembered that last term when he forgot his jump rope, I handed him my spare one. Such a small thing, and he remembered it until today. So this is how people pay each other back: you hand over a rope, and someone returns a stretch of road.

The next day I found him and said carefully: thank you for running with me yesterday. My ears got hot while I said it, but I did not run away. He scratched his head and said it was no big deal. But I saw the corner of his mouth lift once.

Since then I made a rule for myself: when I see someone fall, get stuck, or stand alone with nobody around, I reach out first. Last month during choir practice, Zhou Yu, the new transfer student, stood at the end of the line too shy to open her mouth. I pulled her to my side and said: I will teach you this tune. She sang off-key, and we both laughed.

My mother asks how I suddenly became so warm-hearted. I cannot explain big principles. I only remember that when I lay on the ground, the one thing the whole world needed was that hand in front of me. Gratitude taught me two things: when someone helps you, look into his eyes and say thank you; and that hand must not be received only once, it has to be passed on.

This is probably the maturity gratitude taught me: not learning to talk well, but learning to reach out.
