Two Lights and a Grateful Heart
Dear teachers, dear students: good morning. The topic of my speech under the national flag today is: two lights and a grateful heart.
Students, have you noticed that our day is lit and released by two lights? The first light shines at home. Before the sky fully brightens, the spatula already sounds in the kitchen, and under that light stands our father or mother. They set breakfast on the table, press our school uniforms smooth, fill our water bottles with hot water, and watch us leave home. That light has been on for more than ten years and has never taken a single day off.
The second light shines at school. After school in the evening, one window in the teaching building is always lit: the teacher is grading our homework. On one exercise book there are three traces of the red pen: a corrected character, one line of comment, an encouraging smile. By day the teacher breaks knowledge apart and explains it to us; by night they write those traces stroke by stroke. That light often stays on until we fall asleep.
Students, the road under our feet has been walked under the light of these two lamps. The devotion of parents hides in hot porridge, clean clothes, and one sentence of go slowly on the road. The teaching of teachers is written on the blackboard, in the red pen, and in the words do not rush, I will explain it again. These devotions are not owed to us by nature. They could have ignored us, they could have taken the easy way. They did not, because of love.
Under the national flag, I want to ask everyone: facing these two lights, what do we give in return? I believe the answer is not some great exam victory in the distant future, but action starting today.
Here I put forward three calls to the whole school. First, treat seriousness as a gift. Do not drift in class, do not be careless with homework, so that every comment in the teacher red pen deserves their late nights. Second, bring thoughtfulness home. Say well done, Mom and Dad, to the parents serving meals; clear your own bowls after dinner; do the housework once on the weekend, so that the grown-up under the light at home can rest too. Third, pass gratitude onward. Thank the gatekeeper, the cafeteria aunties, and the cleaning staff; help classmates in difficulty around you. A person lit by two lights should also become a small light.
Students, gratitude is not a slogan but an action; not once today, but every day. From today on, let us keep a grateful heart, and let those two lights know that their brightness was not in vain.
That ends my speech. Thank you, everyone!
Do Not Let Gratitude Stop at the Flag
Dear teachers and students: good morning! The topic of my speech today is: do not let gratitude stop at the flag.
Last week at class meeting, some classmates talked about Thanksgiving Day in foreign countries, saying they would thank their mom and dad on that day. My heart moved at that: why should gratitude wait for a festival? Does only the day circled on the calendar deserve a thank you? Standing under the national flag today, I want to talk about how gratitude should grow inside every ordinary day.
First, about our parents. Students, have you seen the street at five in the morning? Our mothers and fathers have. They get up before dawn, check our schoolbags first, prepare breakfast, take us to school, then rush off to work. Some parents carry bricks at construction sites, their palms worn into calluses; some parents work night shifts at hospitals, yet still force energy into their faces to pick us up after school; some parents mind a stall at the vegetable market, haggling over a few cents with others, yet buying us a brand new schoolbag. They never cry tired, because for their children they feel nothing is tiring.
Next, about our teachers. Last week our math teacher voice was so hoarse she could barely speak, yet she insisted on standing at the podium, covering the whole wall of the blackboard with chalk, using board writing in place of lecturing. Our head teacher is the first to arrive at the classroom every morning and the last to leave at night. When teachers scold us, we feel unhappy inside, yet they could have left us alone. They hold us to account because they treat our future as their own business.
Students, the white hairs of our parents and the red streaks in our teachers eyes were worn out for us. Yet we so often treat all of it as air. So today, I do not want to call on everyone to say a pretty thank you on some festival. I want to call on everyone to keep one week of persistence.
This week, please complete three small deeds. Deed one: before leaving home every day, say to your parents: I am off to school, Mom and Dad, thank you for your hard work. Let the first sentence when you return be: I am back, thank you Mom and Dad. Deed two: this week, be serious once in class and neat once in homework, offering your best state to the teacher. That is the strongest payback to a teacher. Deed three: this week do one fixed chore at home: wash dishes every day, or take out the trash every day, seven days without breaking the chain. When it is done, put a check mark in your heart.
Students, the most moving part of gratitude lies not in what is said but in what is persisted in. One thank you is a spark; seven days of persistence is a torch. However loudly we speak under the flag, gratitude truly begins only when we return to the classroom and to our homes.
May every student in our school turn a grateful heart into the daily breath, and let our parents and teachers see: your children have grown up.
My speech is over. Thank you, everyone!
