The Year Rain Traces Crawled Across the Glass

I am pressed to the window again. I know this posture. I have rested my chin on the windowsill like this since I was eight, watching rain walk across the glass.

Rain traces move without pattern. Some stop the moment they start and freeze into a small round bead. Others suddenly speed up, winding all the way to the bottom, dragging a bright line behind them. Smaller beads inside the line catch up, merge, and the line grows a little thicker and keeps crawling. When two traces meet halfway they join and go faster. As a child I was sure a person was hidden behind the glass, drawing these lines one by one for the world outside to see. When the fog on the glass grew thick, I wrote my own name on it, in mirror writing.

On such a rainy day when I was eight, I lay at the window of the old house watching for Mom to come back from town. The glass was old and faintly green, and the traces crawled slowly across it. Suddenly I saw a shadow move behind the glass. It was Mom. She stood outside without coming in, looked at me through the glass, wiped a small circle in the fog with her hand, and mouthed to me: homework done. I nodded. She laughed, turned to gather the laundry in the yard, the water from her raincoat dripping from her hem. The patch she had cleared fogged over again quickly, and her figure turned soft and blurred once more. I have carried that for years.

Later the old house windows were replaced with aluminum ones, and later still I moved to an apartment with double glazing. Fog no longer forms on such glass, and Mom can no longer wipe a small circle in it. When she visits for a few days, on rainy days she comes to the window and presses to it beside me, looks for a while, and says this rain is like the one back home. Her voice is very soft, as if afraid to startle the lines crawling on the glass.

The traces are still crawling. I understand now why no two ever take the same path. Time falls this way: it looks slow but never stops, it looks impossible to hold yet every line drags something along with it. The fog Mom wiped is long gone, but she wiped that fog for me to see; her back as she gathered the laundry has receded, but once rain falls, that back returns behind the glass.

Dusk comes, the rain eases. I rise from the window. The last trace on the glass edges slowly to the bottom, stops, and lets the streetlight just switched on outside shine into the room. I turn off the lamp and let that bright line walk once more in the dark. When it reaches the end, I remember it for it.

The Lamp Behind the Glass

Evening study hall ended and the rain was still falling. Instead of going back to the dorm I first walked to the window at the end of the corridor and leaned there for a while. I did not decide to. My feet stopped on their own.

The corridor lamp laid a pale yellow square on the glass, and the rain traces passed through that yellow, one by one, like someone striking matches slowly in the dark. Some went out halfway; some reached the bottom and gathered into a small pool in the sill groove. I stretched a fingertip toward a trace on the glass, racing it, and neither of us ever won. I learned this game in primary school. Across twenty years of rain, my finger is still clumsy.

In middle school I boarded, and home was six kilometers from school. Mother came every Wednesday evening with a dish in an aluminum lunch box, waiting for me at the gate after study hall. Once in a heavy rain she arrived early, could not get in, and stood under the awning inside the school gate. I came out of the teaching building and saw her through the curtain of rain; she saw me through it too. The water lines between us, like rain traces, cut her outline into pieces. She lifted the lunch box and shook it. I saw that gesture clearly through all the rain, and the beads on the box flashed once under the streetlight.

Later I lived closer to school and she no longer waited in rain. Later still I lived a thousand miles from home, and pressing to a stranger city's window on a rainy day, the first thing I think of is still that lamp. The lamp at home stayed lit until whatever hour I came back from study hall. Once I came home early, pushed the door open, and found her asleep leaning on the window glass beside the dinner table, her face pressing a small patch of fog, the lunch box upside down by her hand. She had waited until she dozed off, and the place she leaned was the same window I lean at.

The traces keep sliding. Suddenly I dare not count them. To count one is to lose one. But I know some things are not under the rain's jurisdiction. Lamps get replaced, glass gets replaced, the one who waits grows old, yet the way that light fell on the lunch box, on the back of her hand, into my eyes the instant I pushed the door, is stored in my body, more lasting than any rain.

On the way back to the dorm I left my umbrella in the umbrella stand in the entryway to drip all night. Tomorrow morning, dry, I will open it again and walk to the canteen. And the warmth of that lunch box on that rainy night, after all these years, is still there the moment I close my palm.
