The Beaded Curtain Under the Eaves

The rain in the city comes in through the crack of the window, first a thread of coolness, then sound. Sitting under the lamp, listening to raindrops tap the security bars, I suddenly think of the eaves of the old house back home, and a rain sound utterly unlike this one.

The old house had green tiles, one overlapping the next on a gentle slope. When rain began, the tile grooves came alive. Water ran along the grooves, faster and faster, and at the eaves edge it lined up, one drop chasing the next, falling, stretching into thin bright threads. A beaded curtain hung under the eaves. When wind came the curtain slanted; when sun came the beads glinted. As a child I crouched under the eaves watching the beads fall and burst into little flowers of water, and could spend half an afternoon that way.

Before a bead lands there is a brief acceleration; after it lands there is a crisp note. In heavy rain ten thousand crisp notes merge into one sheet of sound, and the old house seems lifted by the rain, swaying gently. Grandmother sat on the threshold snapping vegetables, head down, saying this rain has soaked through, the rice must be drinking its fill. Her tone was so steady, as if the rain were someone hired to mind the fields for her.

When the rain eased we charged into the yard. Water crossed the brick seams and squelched under our sandals. I chased the current, sprinting from the front door to the jujube tree and back, trousers soaked through. Grandmother called from under the eaves, slow down, the mud is slippery. I did not slow down. The jujube leaves turned their silver undersides out under the rain; the chickens huddled under the woodshed eaves, necks tucked in. The yard was full of our laughter and the water, mixed together, impossible to tell apart.

The year I left the old house for school in town, the day I left it did not rain. Over these years I have heard countless rains in the city, tapping glass, tapping awnings, tapping air conditioner units, none of them that sound. Only in dreams have I gone back a few times. The beaded curtain still hangs at the eaves, Grandmother still sits on the threshold, and I part the curtain, crawl in, call Grandma, and she turns her head.

The rain outside the window is still falling. I know the eaves of the old house were long ago replaced with a concrete gutter. The beads are gone; water goes straight into the pipe with a dull sound. But homesickness does not require the old house to still stand. Once rain falls and the tile grooves come alive, that beaded curtain hangs again in my ears, and on the other side of it, eight-year-old me is still stomping through water, never looking back.

The Day I Went Back to Watch the Rain

The day I went back to the village, it was raining. When the bus stopped at the village entrance the rain was at its heaviest. I walked toward the old house under my umbrella, the sound of water keeping me company all the way.

The old house had stood empty for three years, the padlock rusted. Opening the door let out a smell of damp, and inside it was darker than outside. I did not start tidying. I carried a bench out and sat under the eaves. The eaves were still the old eaves, the rafters aged, their color deep as if steeped in tea. Rain gathered in the tile grooves and fell from the edge in a line, drop after drop, punching a row of small pits in the ground. The pits held water, shining, like someone had set a row of little lamps under the eaves.

I counted the drops. Past a dozen I lost track; they fell fast, and before one pit smoothed over another drop struck into it. I know this sound with my eyes closed. In such rains, when I was small, Grandmother set every bamboo basin and washbasin under the eaves to catch the leaks, ding-dong-ding, the house full of an out-of-tune band. She hurried back and forth emptying water, muttering that the rain is heavy and the roof leaks, the house is poor but the heart is not. I did not understand then. Sitting now in the empty house, suddenly every word makes sense.

When the rain eased I walked into the yard. The grass between the bricks grew taller than in my memory. The jujube tree was still there, and under it a puddle reflected a piece of sky. Standing at its edge, I suddenly saw my eight-year-old self come charging out of the front door, trouser cuffs rolled up, chasing the running water across the yard, stomping into the puddle so that spray hit the jujube tree and startled a sparrow into flight. Back then the yard always felt big, and on rainy days bigger still; I ran until I could not breathe and still hated to stop. Now the yard is so small that one step carries me across that puddle.

Inside I found Grandmother's old umbrella, blue cloth canopy, one rib wrapped with tape. I opened it and stood under the eaves the way she used to stand in my memory. The rain fell again, drumming on the canopy, the sound spreading out above my head. In that moment I felt she had not gone far. She had simply gone ahead and taken her seat on the other side of the threshold, still watching me run from under the eaves, still telling me slow down, the mud is slippery.

The rain stopped when I left. I changed the lock, then looked back. Water still dripped from the eaves, one string, then another. The old house stood empty, yet the sound of rain had not broken. I know that from now on, in every rain, I can find my way back without a map. The string of beads at the eaves keeps the road in memory for me.
