The Cup on the Podium

The voice of Ms. Li went hoarse on Tuesday.

When she read from the textbook, a crackle came out of her throat, like dry leaves being crushed underfoot. She said a word, and the word broke in the middle. She paused and read it again. This time it broke again. The whole class fell silent, and you could even hear the fan turning.

In those days, Ms. Li drank water all the time. The cup on the podium was green, with a lid, and a small piece of the lid had been chipped away. Every time she finished half a sentence, she lifted it for a sip, and when she set it down, the lid clicked against the rim. That click used to be the most ordinary sound in the world. In those days, every time it sounded, I looked up at her.

During the break after the second period, I sat at my desk thinking. The thermos stood in the back corner of the classroom, and pouring one cup of water was easy, but I had never done it. Pour it for whom? For Ms. Li? What if she said no?

I was fiddling with my pencil case when the bell for the next class was about to ring. I stood up suddenly, walked to the back corner, and held the thermos in both arms. The handle burned my hand, so I switched it to my left.

I poured half a cup into the green cup, then added a little cold water. Too hot and the teacher could not drink it, too cold and it would hurt her throat. I stood there holding the cup and watched the steam fade away.

I set the cup at the corner of the podium nearest to where Ms. Li stood.

She was writing on the blackboard. When she turned and saw the cup, she looked at the cup first, then at me. I lowered my head and pretended to straighten the books on my desk, my ears burning.

She said nothing. She lifted the cup and took a sip.

Then she smiled. The smile was small, the corners of her mouth lifting only a little, but her eyes were curved. She went on with the sentence she had been explaining, in that hoarse voice, and that sentence I heard more clearly than any other.

After school I went to the water station and filled the thermos. The next day I poured water again during the break. On the third day, before I even stood up, my deskmate had already lifted the thermos.

The voice of Ms. Li recovered in late November. When she read the textbook again, the crackle was gone, and every word came out whole. But I still remember those days, the click of the cup lid, and the small smile.

The Girl with the Water Cup

The one who poured the water was not me. It was Zhou Yuanyuan.

That morning, when Teacher Zhao opened her mouth, the whole class looked at one another. Her voice had become low and rough, as if something were stuffed in her throat. She said: Open your books to page forty-eight, and the last few words were almost swallowed. Someone in the back row giggled out loud. Teacher Zhao did not get angry. She paused and said: My voice is hoarse today, please listen carefully.

Teacher Zhao had been hoarse for two days. On the first day she blamed a cold; on the second day she offered no explanation. Her cup was white, with no lid, and by the second period a layer of tea dust floated on the water. She took a sip, and her brow moved slightly. The water had gone cold.

During the break after the third period, I was peeling an orange. Zhou Yuanyuan suddenly stood up from the second row, took a water cup out of her schoolbag, and walked to the podium. The cup was pink, printed with a small cartoon figure, brand new, as if she had just bought it.

She held the cup with both hands and stood beside the podium, saying nothing at first. Teacher Zhao looked up at her. Zhou Yuanyuan said: Teacher, please drink some water. This is warm water, brought from home.

Teacher Zhao took the cup, and her smile opened slowly across her face, first at the corners of her eyes, then at her mouth. She said: Thank you, Zhou Yuanyuan. Her voice was still hoarse, but she said the name very clearly.

Zhou Yuanyuan walked back to her seat, red all the way to the tips of her ears. She whispered to me: My heart was beating so loudly I could hear it. I asked her if she would do it again tomorrow. She thought for a moment and said: Yes. Water tastes bad once it goes cold.

The next day I brought my own cup to school and set it at the corner of the podium. The day after that, a boy in the back row brought a box of throat lozenges and placed them beside the lesson plans. By Friday the corner of the podium was piled full, and Teacher Zhao said: That is enough, everyone. I cannot finish all of this.

When the voice of Teacher Zhao recovered, the first thing she did was return the pink cup to Zhou Yuanyuan. She set it on the desk of the girl, and on the lid she had drawn a smiley face with a pen.

After that, our classroom always kept a cup ready on the podium. When teachers from other classes came to teach us, there was water on the podium when class ended. Nobody said anything, and everybody knew.
