Gratitude Woven on a Spider Web

When I read the page where Charlotte died alone on the fair grandstand, I flipped back three times, hoping the next page would say she had gone home. The book held only one sentence: no one was with her. The spider who had saved a life spent her last night by herself.

The scene that stayed with me most happened earlier. To save Wilbur, Charlotte spun her web through whole nights, first the words Some Pig, then Radiant and Humble. The next morning the barn was in an uproar, while she only said it was her job. She never asked Wilbur for anything, not even thanks. Wilbur told her she was his best friend and that he loved her. She answered that his love was already the reward.

Closing the book, I thought of my mother. Last winter I saw her wash dishes in cold water every day, her hands cracked, so I took over all the dishes. The water stung, and the grease left a film no matter how often I rinsed. After the dishes I wiped the stove and the table. Mother had done this for years without a word of complaint. That evening she kept saying I had grown up, and I blushed. Next to a spider who asks for nothing, what I did was small.

In the second half, Wilbur carries the egg sac of Charlotte back to the barn in his mouth and guards it all night, afraid the wind will blow it away. In spring the baby spiders float off one by one on silk threads, and only three stay with him. Wilbur talks to them the way Charlotte once did. Reading this I understood: someone who was helped remembers forever, and remembering means not saying thanks out loud every day but passing the kindness on.

The book is closed, the words on the web faded, but something in me is different. I no longer want gratitude to stay in my mouth. In the morning I fill the hot-water flask by the door. On rainy days I walk to the bus stop to meet my mother. On her birthday I will bring a basin of warm water for her feet instead of asking for a gift. I plan to ask my deskmate to join me, one small thing for the family each day. Charlotte wove gratitude into her web; I want to weave it into my days. Once gratitude is done with hands, life really starts to improve.

Shoes That Walked Thirty Li Through Snow

I read that passage twice, and each time I had to pause. On the first day of school, Qingtong and Grandpa walked Sunflower to school, the snow so thick they could barely see. Thirty li. Grandpa led the way, Qingtong followed. When they reached the school, neither rested. Grandpa squatted by the wall outside the classroom, beating the snow off his clothes, saying only one line: study hard. On the way home the snow fell harder, the two figures shrinking until only two small dots remained.

What tightened my chest was the detail. Grandpa wore homemade cloth shoes. Melted snow soaked them through, and he walked thirty li home in wet shoes. The book never says whether he was cold or in pain, only that the next day he got up before dawn as always to feed the ox. Givers never mention what they endure. This book taught me to see that.

There is another place in the book. Qingtong waits for Sunflower at the bridge after school every day, carrying a reed lantern. In winter the reeds in the paddy wither, and he cuts them and weaves lamps, hanging them one by one along the road home, afraid she would fear the dark at night. Sunflower later passed the exam for middle school, but the family could afford only one child. Qingtong said he would herd the ox instead, yet at night he hid alone in the reed marsh, his shoulders shaking with silent crying. All this goodness never made a sound.

I remembered the summer in the village, when Grandpa pushed his flat cart to take me to town for books. The dirt road bounced, and the straw rope on the handlebar was worn pale. I had been sitting on the cart edge, then suddenly jumped down and pushed from behind. Grandpa said no need, no need. I stayed silent and pushed all the way to the town entrance. My shoulders ached so badly I could barely lift them, yet Grandpa pushed a cart his whole life and never once said tired. After buying the books he got me a popsicle at the supply co-op, and drank only a bowl of plain water himself.

Closing the book I thought: eyes get wet easily, but keeping that feeling is the hard part. I set three rules for myself. Every weekend I video call Grandpa and read him what I wrote and recited at school. Next time I visit, I take over the cart work and carry the water for the yard. At term end I mail my report card home so Grandpa and Grandma can see it. The grandfathers in books ask for nothing back, but I want them to receive something. Once gratitude is acted on, days grow warm.
