Miguel and His Guitar

On Saturday, my mother watched the film Coco with me. After it ended, I hugged the cushion and sat in a daze for a while. My heart felt warm and sour at the same time.

The boy Miguel in the film is about my age. He loves music and wants to be a musician. But his whole family forbids music, and not even a guitar may stay in the house. Miguel secretly made a small guitar and played it on the roof. When he played, his eyes shone and his whole face smiled. I watched in wonder, thinking that a person who loves something really does glow.

Later, Miguel by a strange turn of events entered the Land of the Dead. The people there can visit the living world only with a blessing from their family. While looking for the famous singer to get a blessing, Miguel met a down-on-his-luck musician named Hector. They passed challenges together and sang together, and Miguel even appeared on television. The Land of the Dead was full of colors, and the bridges were paved with marigold petals. It was beautiful.

But as the story went on, I understood a secret. The famous singer looked great but was actually mean and small. The poor musician Hector was the great-great-grandfather of Miguel, and the person he missed most in life was his daughter Coco. The part where he played the guitar beside the bed of his little daughter made my tears fall at once. The guitar did not carry fame. It carried love.

In the end, Miguel returned to the world of the living, ran home, took up the guitar, and played for his great-grandmother Coco. He sang and called out that her father had never really left. Old Coco hummed along and remembered her papa. The whole family held each other, blessed Miguel, and promised never to forbid music again.

My mother asked what I learned. I said that dreams and family are not enemies. Miguel used the guitar to tie his family together again, and his music helped his great-grandmother remember the one who loved her most. Next time I play the piano for my grandma, I will play more carefully, because a song can carry love inside it.

By the way, as the lights came on, my mother suddenly told me that she secretly learned the accordion as a child, and her own grandmother stopped her. We talked the whole way home. Grown-ups once had the same dreams and simply forgot to say so. From now on I want to ask my mother more about her childhood.

The Petal Bridge in the Land of the Dead

Our teacher asked us to write about a film we watched, and I thought of Coco, which I saw last weekend. In that film there is a world I had never seen before, called the Land of the Dead.

The story begins with the boy Miguel. His family forbids music, yet he plays the guitar in secret and dreams of standing on a big stage. To get a blessing and follow his dream, he wanders into the Land of the Dead by mistake. Dead people live there in colorful buildings. Only on the Day of the Dead, if the living still remember them, can they cross the petal bridge to visit.

I love that bridge. It is paved with orange marigold petals and stretches from far away all the way to the world of the living. Lanterns hang along it, and the dead walk across in lines. Some are recognized by their families and jump for joy; others stand at the bridge head in a daze, because nobody puts up their photo and they cannot cross. My heart felt heavy there. Being forgotten, it turns out, is a very lonely thing.

In that world Miguel has his adventure while playing the guitar. He sings for the famous singer and gets thrown into a pit. He goes with Hector to ask for a blessing, passing checkpoints, appearing on television, and being chased. Hector is truly a poor soul. He wants to see his daughter, but she is old and almost forgetting him, and his head was cut out of the family photo. Miguel helps him, and the two of them sing Remember Me together.

At the end, the truth comes out, the bad man gets what he deserves, and Miguel runs home to play the guitar and sing for great-grandmother Coco. Coco sings along, takes the half photo out of a drawer, and it shows Hector. The family is reunited at last, and the photo of Hector goes back on the family altar. The next year, he crossed the petal bridge happily.

The film taught me this: the real goodbye is forgetting. As long as someone remembers you, keeps your photo, and tells your story, you have not left. From now on I want to listen more often when my grandparents talk about the past, and keep them safely in my heart.
