The Ten Minutes I Learned to Spend Well

Before fourth grade, I did not know how to spend the ten minutes of recess. The moment the class bell rang, I was the first one out of the door. I ran down to the playground and played eagle-catches-chicks like crazy, and only ran back when the next bell rang. Sitting down in class, my heart pounded like a drum, my throat was dry enough to crack, and everything the teacher said slid past my ears.

The change happened on a Wednesday in the second term of third grade. The class after that recess was math. I was so thirsty that my head swam, and I wrote the number 6 as an 8. My deskmate Tao Yiming pushed his notebook over to show me the mistake and asked quietly: did you forget to drink water during recess? I froze for a second, and only then noticed that he was always calm in class, and the water bottle on his desk was always half empty.

The next day I started to copy him. When the bell rang, I did not rush out. I took out my bottle and slowly finished a full glass of water, then went to the toilet, and only then went downstairs. With six or seven minutes left, I jumped rope with my friends in one spot for a few rounds, without running around. Just before the bell, I returned to my seat, placed the book of the next class on the desk, and sat quietly for two minutes.

In that math class I raised my hand twice. The problems had not become easier. My heart had finally settled.

One small thing more made me steady. I used to yawn through the first afternoon class, because after running wildly at noon I could not eat well. Now I drink water and chat quietly in the classroom at noon, my lunch tastes good, and my eyelids no longer fight in the first afternoon lesson.

Later my good friend Wang Xiaohu also adopted this way of spending recess. He used to forget the toilet and had to raise his hand in the middle of a lesson, which embarrassed him every time. We made a pact: when the bell rings, do the two things that are not exciting but necessary first, and play after that. The playground is still the same playground; we just no longer run around like crazy.

After one month I found the secret. The ten minutes of recess are like a small road between two classes. Run wildly on that road, and you arrive at the next class out of breath and thirsty. Walk it slowly: drink a glass of water, visit the toilet, jump rope a little, come back early, and you arrive with your heart already in place.

Now I no longer think of recess as time for wild play. It is time you arrange yourself. Water, toilet, a simple game, and a return two minutes early: these four things sound ordinary, yet they saved every afternoon class of mine.

My Recess, in a New Order

If you had asked me last year how I spent recess, I would have said: the second the bell rings, I run downstairs to grab the badminton court. Grabbing the court was fun, but the price was a smoking throat in the next class, and a raised hand in the middle of the lesson asking for the toilet.

The most embarrassing time was one Friday. I played shuttlecock during recess and ran back to the classroom when the bell rang. Two minutes into the Chinese class, my stomach hurt badly. I raised my hand and said: teacher, I need the toilet. The whole class laughed, and my face burned like fire. When I came back, the second half of the text had already been covered, and I could not follow at all.

The other time happened in PE class. The teacher asked us to run two laps, I felt dizzy, and I stood aside. The teacher asked when I had last drunk water, and I could not remember. My bottle had been full since morning, untouched inside my schoolbag.

After those two incidents, I began to watch how the steadiest student in our class spends recess. Tao Yiming takes out her bottle after the bell, drinks several big mouthfuls, walks to the toilet, then joins the jump rope group downstairs, and returns to her seat just before the next bell with the book of the new class laid out. She does all of it without rushing, like reciting an order she has memorized.

I copied that order. First water, second the toilet, third the play. The play is simple too: jump rope, rubber-band skipping, or a chat at the edge of the playground, without chasing each other. The last two minutes belong to my seat and the book of the next class.

For the first two weeks I also got lazy. Sometimes I got carried away playing and forgot the water, so the next day I put the bottle right at the corner of my desk to remind myself. Tao Yiming saw it and laughed at me: leave the water on the desk, and once your eyes see it, you will drink. I did that, and never forgot again.

One term has passed. I have never asked for the toilet in the middle of a lesson again, and I have never felt dizzy in PE again. Last week in science class, when the teacher asked where the water in our body goes, I raised my hand first. I slowly understand that recess is not only about playing happily. It is also about getting yourself ready and sending yourself to the next class. A glass of water, one trip to the toilet, ten minutes of a simple game: my whole arrangement is really just this.
