Let Safety Stand Guard for Happiness
Teachers and fellow students, good morning. Standing under the national flag, I want to talk about the ten minutes we meet every day: our recess.
Let me start with something from last week. During the break on Monday morning, a first grade boy fell down on the stairs. Luckily a fifth grade classmate behind him reached out and held him up, and he only scraped his knee. Later the little boy said one sentence that stayed with me for a long time. He said he was afraid of the older students running past in the hallway, and that we felt to him like little storms. When we rush through the hallways we think it feels great, but in the eyes of the younger students we are exactly the unsafe wind.
Happiness and safety are not enemies. Let me show you a few scenes from our playground. Our class draws a grid with chalk for hopscotch, everyone queues and takes turns, and nobody has to push. The girls count the beat while skipping rope, and the more they jump the more focused they become. The boys play a passing game with one rule: no lunging for the ball, only intercepting it. In these games nobody got hurt, yet the laughter was never less. You see, choose the right games, and happiness grows right on top of safety.
Today I want to give everyone three safety reminders under the flag. First, walk slowly in the hallway, keep to the right, and make room for the younger students. Second, play your games on the open ground of the playground, away from the stair doors, the railings, and the corners of the flag platform. Third, bring safe small items like jump ropes, shuttlecocks, and beanbags to school, and leave dangerous things at home.
Fellow students, the red flag was won with the courage of revolutionary martyrs. We who stand under the flag should also have the courage to control ourselves and the courage to look after others. Please let every class start this week a promise of walking slowly in the hallway and playing games on the playground, and let class monitors and sports committee members be safety referees. If you see a classmate chasing in the hallway, please remind him gently. If you see someone standing alone, please invite him into your game.
Let us make every recess safe, let us make every recess happy, and let the red flag above our heads shine brighter.
That is all for my speech. Thank you all.
Hire a Bodyguard for Your Fun
Teachers and fellow students, good morning. I am the sports committee member of class three, grade six. The topic I want to speak about today under the flag is this: hire a bodyguard for your fun.
Let me tell you about a game that fell apart. One break, we played eagle catches chicks on the playground. Before the game started, nobody drew a line and nobody set a rule. The eagle pounced hard, the mother hen blocked, and the little chick at the end of the line had her clothes pulled. She fell to the ground and cried. The game broke up, and nobody was happy. Then our teacher said one sentence that woke me up: it is not the games that are dangerous, it is the games without rules that are dangerous.
The next time we played, we made some changes. We drew two white lines with chalk, and once a chick hid behind the mother hen she must not cross the line. We set up a safety referee on a rotating shift, standing in the middle of the field with both arms held out flat. If anyone ran too fast or pushed, the referee blew the whistle and the whole field froze for ten seconds. We also decided that the eagle wins only with a light touch, and if someone falls, everyone stops moving at once and helps that person up first. That game lasted the full ten minutes, and nobody cried. When the bell rang, nobody wanted to leave.
From this I understood one thing: safety rules do not stop us from playing, they keep the game going. Rules are like the bodyguard of happiness. They do not look lovable, but at the key moment they guard us the best.
So I propose to the whole school: let every class hire two safety referees for recess, taking turns on duty; let every game begin with one minute to set the rules, draw the lines, and divide the teams; play freely on the playground, and walk softly and slowly in the hallway. The PE group will hold a hopscotch contest and a jump rope contest next week, and every class is welcome to sign up. All contest games follow the rules of no pushing, no grabbing, and no pulling clothes.
Fellow students, remember three sentences: set the rules before the game, play your games on open ground, and lend a hand first when someone falls. Keep these three sentences in your heart, and happiness will always have a bodyguard, and recess will always have laughter.
That is all for my speech. Thank you all.
