Twenty Minutes in the Corridor

When the bell comes down, the taut string of a whole lesson loosens.

I put the pen down, like setting down a very heavy tool.

The corridor is wider than the classroom, brighter than the classroom; the corridor takes in everyone who wants to get out.

I lean on the railing; the railing is cool, cool enough to wake a person up.

Sunlight sets out from the roof of the teaching building opposite, walking inch by inch along the white line beside the playground.

It lights the shadow of the flagpole first, then the legs of the basketball hoop, and finally stops on the tips of my shoes.

I stand still and let the sunlight measure for me how long the tiredness of one class period has grown.

The wind comes from the playground side and turns the test paper someone forgot by the window, rustle, like applause.

Next door someone is reciting vocabulary, the words scattering in the wind, scattering halfway through.

Two classmates lean on the railing at the other end, saying nothing, just watching the people below come and go.

Silence is a kind of rest too; silence does not look strange here.

Someone laughs quietly, laughing at something only the two of them understand.

The broadcast station dozes; half a line of music leaks from the speaker, as if coming from far away.

I count the floor tiles the sunlight passes over, one, two, the corridor floor polished bright by it.

Twenty minutes, not enough to finish a test paper, enough to slow my breathing down.

Twenty minutes, not enough to solve one hard problem, enough to think about something that has nothing to do with scores.

For instance, that tree downstairs, when did it grow so deep a green.

For instance, last autumn, a different me was standing right here.

The class bell waits in the distance; it is not in a hurry, it knows we will go back.

The sunlight rests on my shoe tips for a while, then moves on.

I stretch, and the tight things inside my bones quietly retreat an inch.

The corridor empties slowly, figures retreating into classrooms, like a tide going out.

I take one last look at the playground, saving this brightness away in my eyes.

Back at my seat, the pen picked up again, my hand lighter than before.

The words on the blackboard are still those words, but the way I look at them has changed.

The bell takes charge of the beginning and the end; these twenty minutes in between belong to me.

The sunlight walks the same road every day, and I stand where it passes, waiting for the next ring.

The Light We Walked Through Side by Side

The moment the bell rings, we trade a glance, the escape code of a jailbreak.

You did not bring your water bottle, yet you must go to the water room; the water room is at the far end of the corridor, on the way, though not really on the way.

We walk side by side, shoulders one hand-width apart, our shadows folded into one.

The window at the end of the corridor pours light in, splashing it across the floor, and we deliberately walk where the light is.

Stepping on it, the soles feel a little warm, like treading on a quilt someone has sunned.

You say you spaced out for three minutes in math class, thinking about the ball game on Saturday.

I say I spaced out for two minutes, thinking about the last piece of sweet-and-sour pork at the canteen.

We argue earnestly for three minutes about whether spacing out counts as rest.

You say it does, because the brain switched to a different problem; I say it does not, because you forgot it the moment the bell rang.

These words are useless, they will not appear on any exam, and no teacher will ask about them.

But break time exists precisely for holding useless talk; useless talk is the candy of the break.

Passing the notice board, both our names are on the progress list, seven names apart.

Neither of us points, neither mentions it, yet both our steps slow by half a beat.

The sunlight moves to the stairway mouth, turning the handrail gold; we go downstairs holding it, like holding a river.

Younger students run below, their shouts hitting the wall and bouncing back.

Suddenly you say, after graduation, a corridor like this will be gone.

I say, do not talk like an old person, the bell has not rung yet.

We take the long way, from the second floor up to the third, then from the third back to our classroom door.

The walk should take forty seconds; we take three minutes, and neither of us checks the watch.

The bell rises behind us, not chasing us, simply opening a door and closing it.

You go back to your seat, I go back to mine; the light stays in the corridor, waiting for the next pair of feet.

After sitting down I realize those three minutes refreshed me more than ten minutes of sleep.

So the break gives us more than a body leaving a chair; it gives us words to say to the right person.

The class bell takes the corridor away, takes the sunlight away, folds our small talk into memory.

Tomorrow when the bell rings, you will still forget your bottle, and I will still keep you company on that road that is not on the way.

The light relays itself fresh every day, and we step on it side by side every day; that is enough.
