Let the Ten Minutes of Recess Shine

Teachers and classmates, good morning. Today I want to talk about the ten minutes standing right in front of us.

Let me start with an experience. On Wednesday morning last week, during the break after the second lesson, I was in the third floor hallway. A fourth grade boy was chased by two classmates. At the corner he crashed into a first grade girl carrying a water cup. The cup flew away, the boy scraped his knee and bled, and the girl was scared into tears. A teacher hurried over and everyone gathered around. In those ten minutes nobody was happy: the hurt boy cried, the chasing boys hung their heads, and the onlookers were frightened.

A few days later, our class break looked completely different. The sports committee member brought out the class shuttlecocks and jump ropes, and several girls drew a hopscotch grid with chalk. The students who used to chase in the hallway lined up for hopscotch, and the students who used to hide in the corner of the classroom started a shuttlecock contest. I watched from the window and counted: in those ten minutes almost nobody in our class was idle, and nobody ran wildly in the hallway. The sound from the playground was not screaming but counting, beat after beat, full of energy.

From these two scenes I understood one thing. The same ten minutes can be a dangerous moment or a happy moment, and the difference lies in what we do with them. The ten minutes are not for enduring, and they are not for running wild either. They are for stretching legs that sat through forty minutes, drinking some water, looking at the sky far away, and playing one round of a game we truly like. Only when the ten minutes are enjoyed well can the next forty minutes be sat through calmly.

So on behalf of the student brigade I make this proposal to the whole school. First, bring your jump ropes, shuttlecocks, and rubber bands out of your schoolbags and put them to work. Second, play your games on the open ground of the playground, not in the hallway and not beside the stairs. Third, set one small rule for ourselves: walk slowly in the hallway, play freely on the playground. Class monitors and sports committee members, please lead one mini contest this week, a shuttlecock contest or a short rope contest. Students who do not like sports can be referees or scorekeepers, and nobody is left out.

Everyone, the ten minutes are short, but they are enough for one shuttlecock to go up and down ten times, enough for one full round of hopscotch, enough for one big laugh. Let us all be the masters of the ten minutes and make every break shine.

That is all for my speech. Thank you all.

One Shuttlecock Pulled Me Out of My Seat

Teachers and classmates, good morning. I am no brigade captain and no class monitor. I am just an ordinary student of class five, grade six. Today I want to tell you the story of one shuttlecock.

Before last term, I never knew how to spend a break. The boys chased one another, the girls gathered in small clusters to chat, and I sat at my desk pretending to tidy my schoolbag. In fact there was nothing in the bag to tidy. I was afraid to join in. What if I kept tripping over the jump rope and everybody laughed. So I crouched at my desk through the ten minutes, and when the bell rang I felt more tired than after sitting through one more lesson.

The change came with the transfer student. On the break of his first day, he took a feathered shuttlecock out of his schoolbag and kicked it beside the pillar in front of the teaching building. One, two, three, the shuttlecock went up and down, and more and more people gathered around. He said loudly, whoever can catch it with one foot may take a turn. I stood at the very edge of the circle. He kicked the shuttlecock gently toward me and said, your turn. My first kick hit my knee and dropped. The circle burst out laughing, but it was not mean laughter. The second time I caught it. The third time I kicked three in a row. When the bell rang that day, I walked back to my seat as light as if I could fly.

Now our class has a shuttlecock group of more than ten people, and the shuttlecock lives in the drawer by the platform, taken out each day by the student on duty. I also came to understand that a break is not a wall between people. It is a bridge. One game, one round of rock paper scissors, one relay of the jump rope, and the classmate beside you turns into a friend. The joy of a break cannot be waited for in a seat. It grows out of the step you take when you walk out.

So I want to make this proposal to my classmates. If you also used to crouch at your desk like me, try this week to bring one small sports item to school, a shuttlecock, a jump rope, or a beanbag. Do not worry about playing badly. The first kick of the shuttlecock always hits the knee. Start one small game beside the pillar, and the circle will grow by itself. And if you already play well, please do what the transfer student did for me: kick the shuttlecock gently toward the person standing outside the circle. That one kick is warmer than anything else.

Everyone, take up your shuttlecock, and let us play together under the big locust tree, so that every break someone will call out to you: it is your turn.

Thank you all.
