Jump Rope Song, Count to One Hundred

The break bell, ding-a-ling, I hug my rope out of the classroom.

The rope is long, the rope is round, whirl it up, a rainbow ring.

One two three, jump right in, the rope slaps the ground pat-pat-pat.

Four five six, do not stop, my feet have little springs inside.

Seven eight nine, my good friend, counting for me, shouting bright.

Ten-eleven-twelve-thirteen, laughter runs along with the count.

The rope is fast, a pinwheel, spinning sunlight into pieces.

After twenty jumps it is the turn of Xiao Mei, her braids flying up to the sky.

Her style is hopping on one foot, switching left to right, a joyful little crane.

After thirty it is Xiao Qiang, he falls on his seat, no tears, up he gets, and laughter rolls around him.

Xiao Qiang pats his trousers and says once more, once more, and the rope whirls again.

The waiting children line up from the flagpole to the basketball hoop, nobody cutting in, nobody rushing.

Forty, fifty, the sun shines, my nose tip shiny as if oiled.

Sixty, seventy, the wind helps, blowing my shirt hem into a ball.

Eighty, ninety, my voice is hoarse, still shouting on.

Ninety-eight, ninety-nine, the whole class forms one big ring.

One hundred! Done! Laughter pops like popcorn.

Just then, the class bell, softly, like a mother calling my name.

The rope goes into my schoolbag, the laughter into my pocket.

Line up, go upstairs, my heart still strolling on the playground.

Sit down, open the book, and jump-rope shadows dance in the words.

Keep counting tomorrow, one hundred and one is waiting for me.

Rope goes pat, laughter rings, the bell jingles as the show wraps up.

Ten minutes, truly joyful, they are our little song.

The Playground Opens a Happy Little Shop

The break bell is the opening bell, ding-a-ling, the little shop on the playground opens.

The shelves are stocked with games: jump ropes, shuttlecocks, rubber bands, marbles, each better than the last.

The busiest counter is jump rope; the moment a rope whirls, the line stretches all the way to the flagpole.

Those who jump pay with courage, those who watch pay with applause, and nobody owes anybody.

The money of the shop is laughter, jingle, dropping into the pockets of everyone.

Chubby earns a pocketful, laughing so hard he wobbles walking, as if he carries a nest of birds.

The jump rope sister pulls off a double-under, the crowd bursts out laughing, like a sudden rainfall.

The shuttlecock stall is small but crowded, the cock rising and falling, the laughter wave after wave.

The rubber-band girls sing as they hop, horse-orchid blooms twenty-one, their laughter shooting upward.

The shop has a rule: no crying when you fall, a hand pulled you up, and laughter returns at once.

The shop has a wonder: the more you play, the more there is; ten minutes grows richer the more you spend.

I can play nothing, standing dazed at the door, like a child clutching money afraid to buy.

The jump rope sister waves: come, I will lend you a rope. The rope still carries her warmth.

My first jump, tripped; second, tripped; third, over!

The onlookers laugh, and this laughter is for me, warm as a just-baked flatbread.

I land five jumps in a row, five! My pocket jingles; I have money too.

The ten minutes are up, the shop must close; the class bell is the closing bell, ding — ding —

We neither scramble nor push, folding the laughter neatly, tucking it carefully into our pockets.

The ropes go back, the shuttlecocks go back, the laughter returns into each heart.

Going upstairs, pockets jingle, jingle, the laughter shifting inside.

The teacher asks a question in class, I answer right, and inside me another jingle — that is interest.

So the happy little shop pays interest, posting the laughter of today into the dreams of tonight.

The school bell rings, the shop switches to the night shift, and the streetlamps mind the store for us.

Tomorrow ding-a-ling, we bring our courage back to buy, our money long since saved.

Jump rope, laughter, class bell, the three loudest signboards of this little shop.
