My Ten Minutes with Little Jump
Teachers and fellow students, good morning. I am Lin Xiaoyu from class two, grade three. Today I want to talk about my favorite ten minutes, and my best friend Little Jump, who jumps these ten minutes with me.
Little Jump, real name Tao Xiaotiao, sits behind me. I do not know which day it started, but the two of us fell in love with rubber band skipping. At the bell, each of us takes one end, loops the pink rubber band around our ankles, and starts jumping on the open ground beside the teaching building. We jump from ankle height to knee height, from knee height to waist height, and whoever steps on the band swaps out. We keep two candies in our pockets, and we split them when we win a round. We even gave this rubber band a name, the Rainbow, and who is in charge of bringing the Rainbow to school is written on a slip of paper and rotated in turn, with nobody allowed to weasel out. When we are not jumping, the Rainbow sleeps quietly in the side pocket of my schoolbag.
We also had a falling out. Once we both fought to be the one holding the band, and neither wanted to jump, so the band twisted into a lump on the ground. We stood back to back, one at each tree. That break had no laughter. I sat on the steps with an empty heart, as if a treasure were missing. The next break, Little Jump walked over, handed me the band, and said, you hold today, and I will jump two high ones. The moment I took the band, my anger vanished. So friendship is like a rubber band: stretching it a little is fine, and when you let go, it springs back by itself, snapping even louder than before.
Some classmates ask me, what is so fun about ten minutes, it is just one rubber band. I want to say, it is not just a band at all. Inside the band are our cheers when we count to one hundred, the funny faces we make at each other after a bad jump, and the hand that reaches over when someone falls. The ten minutes are short, but they hold all the laughter of my childhood.
Fellow students, I wish everyone could find their own ten minutes: one rubber band, one jump rope, one shuttlecock, anything will do, and find one person willing to play with you until the bell rings. If you find it, treasure it. Do not waste it running wild in the hallway, and do not lose your best friend over a tiny quarrel.
My ten minutes were jumped into being with Little Jump. May your ten minutes have someone jumping along too. Thank you all.
The Friendship the Beanbag Flew Through
Teachers and fellow students, good morning. Today I want to talk about one beanbag, and all the happiness it flew in with.
Last year I transferred to this school. On the first break the classroom was loud and busy, yet nobody knew me. I leaned on the windowsill watching the playground, thinking, will the students here like me. Just then a red and green beanbag thumped down at my feet. A boy at the edge of the field shouted, catch it, take the place. I did not know what to do, so I hurriedly picked it up and threw it back. The whole field cheered. The boy who called me gave me a thumbs up and said, quick hands, come play the next round.
In that round I caught one throw, and our team cheered as if we had won a big prize. Only later did I learn all the rules of beanbag toss: get hit and you leave the field, catch the beanbag and you can bring one teammate back to life, and the more you catch the more amazing you are. When I left the field, Chubby from our team shouted at me, next round I will rescue you. He really caught the beanbag and brought me back, and when I ran back onto the field my chest felt warm.
Now my breaks are the brightest hours of my year. At the bell the few of us dash to the old locust tree, draw the lines, pick teams, settle it with rock paper scissors, and the beanbag flies through the crowd. I have dodged, been hit, caught, and fallen. When someone falls, the game stops at once, help the person first, then play on. My pocket always holds one beanbag. It is worn pale white, and it is a hundred times more fun than a new one. The beanbag was sewn by my mother and stuffed with corn kernels, so it does not hurt when it hits someone. Everyone on the team says the beanbag knows me, and it knows our whole class as well.
Fellow students, I used to think happiness was a one-person affair. Only after coming to this class did I learn that happiness is stretching out your hand when the beanbag flies at you, it is your teammate shouting I will rescue you, it is everybody promising tomorrow, same place, when the game ends. I love my breaks, and I love the people who play with me. Please come under the old locust tree too. The beanbag will say hello for us: hello, let us play together.
That is all for my speech. Thank you all.
