Writing the Water-at-Midmountain Story: Joining Three Plots

The assignment for a hiking short story gives three plots: thirsty at mid-mountain, a stranger uncle offering water, wanting to return the bottle at the summit. The key to joining them is one action plus one line of dialogue per plot, with one object running through the whole story. Plot one, thirst at mid-mountain. Do not write I am dying of thirst. Write concrete thirst: the bottle upside down gives two drops, the cap is opened and closed again, swallowing feels dry. The hero can be a primary school student lagging behind with mom and dad. The dialogue comes from the parents: Is there water left? No. That short exchange makes thirst real. Plot two, the uncle offers water. His entrance needs a source: he comes down from a side trail, an empty bottle in his backpack side pocket, showing he just refilled at the bottom. The offering motion is quick. The bottle comes over with one line: drink up, there is a tap downstairs. Then he leaves, no name given. Kindness in stories works this way, fast to arrive, fast to leave. Plot three, wanting to return the bottle at the top. The water is gone, the bottle empty. The hero looks around the lookout for the backpack with the empty bottle in its side pocket and cannot find him. The dialogue goes to the parents: Will we meet him again? Hard to say. The harvest grows out of hard to say: that water cannot be returned, so learn from him and pass water to someone thirsty next time. The running object is the empty bottle. At mid-mountain it is empty hence thirst. The uncle bottle is also empty because he just refilled. At the end the hero puts the empty bottle into his own side pocket, same pose as the uncle. One bottle, three states, and the story holds together. The closing harvest must be restrained, one or two sentences after the action: the empty bottle goes into the pocket, and from then on the side pocket always holds a spare bottle. No words like kindness or gratitude needed. The action is the harvest. To check how tight the joining is, remove the running object and see whether the story collapses. If it collapses, the joints are tight. If not, weld the object in more firmly.

Sample Story: That Bottle of Water at Mid-Mountain, Paragraph by Paragraph

Suppose the sample is titled That Bottle of Water at Mid-Mountain, five paragraphs. Paragraph one: halfway up, my bottle ran dry. Two shakes upside down produced one drop on my shoe. Dad bottle was empty too. He said drink at the bottom on the way down, and my throat hurt when I swallowed. Breakdown: this paragraph makes thirst concrete. One drop on the shoe is the first detail. One line of dialogue closes the door on asking adults for help, clearing the stage for the uncle. Paragraph two: resting on the steps, an uncle with a big pack came down a side trail, an empty bottle in his side pocket. Seeing me stare at the bottle, he smiled, pulled a full bottle from his pack and handed it over: drink up, filled from the tap downstairs. I said thanks. The bottle was still more than half full. Breakdown: the uncle has a source, side trail, side pocket, tap downstairs, three notes that make a stranger reasonable. He offered only after seeing me stare, so kindness has a trigger instead of appearing from nowhere. Paragraph three: the water tasted good. I passed it to dad for one sip, and his throat moved twice as he drank. I screwed the cap back on and would not finish it. Breakdown: after receiving, add one outward action. The hero is not a funnel that only takes. The throat movement is adult thirst, paired with the child shoe detail. Paragraph four: at the summit I circled the lookout twice looking for that pack with the empty bottle in its side pocket, and did not find it. I asked dad if we could still meet him. He said hard to say. I put the empty bottle into my own side pocket. Breakdown: the failed return is the turn, and the harvest starts here. Circling twice is the concrete search, pocketing the bottle is the concrete lesson. Two actions make the failure unregrettable. Paragraph five: since then my side pocket always carries one extra bottle. Last time a classmate forgot his water, I passed mine over. Breakdown: two closing sentences, one habit, one passing-on. The word kindness never appears, yet the whole story is about it. Students follow this structure: make the lack concrete, give the helper a source, add one outward action, fail the return, pass the thing on.
