How to Write a Rainy Hiking Diary: Three Scenes on One Line
The skeleton of a rainy hiking diary has three scenes: rain starting as you set out, slippery stone steps, and mist rising after the rain stops. Before writing, put the three scenes on slips of paper in a row; that row is the route of the diary. A diary does not record a whole day; it connects these three points, one paragraph per scene, about a hundred words each, plus the two header lines and a closing, and five hundred words are ready.
The first scene is hesitation, and its center is the few minutes standing at the door. Suppose the diary opens like this: Sunday October twenty sixth, light rain. When we reached the foot of the hill the rain started, and nobody in the car moved. Dad said maybe another day, and I stared at the rain on the windshield for a while, then said, let us go up. Hesitation does not need the word conflicted; write nobody moved, staring at the rain, and finally speaking, and three actions act out the hesitation. Whoever says let us climb is worth recording, because that sentence is the starting point of the whole diary.
The second scene is slippery steps, written through feet and hands. Wet stone steps shine, shine means water, water means slipping. Write the feet: on the first step my sole slid and the side of my shoe got wet. Write the hands: on a steep stretch I held the iron railing, and its drops wet my whole palm. Write others: ahead, a kid in a yellow raincoat jumped two steps at a time while his mother shouted slow down behind him. Do not write how thrilling it was; write only the slide, the hand on the railing, the jumping kid, and the reader will feel the tension alone.
The third scene is mist after the rain, the brightest part, worth writing long. When the rain stopped, white vapor rose in the valley; first the far slope disappeared, then the treetops on the summit hid inside it. Write mist in order of change: which layer vanished first, which next, and how long before a piece reappeared. Suppose the diary says: the vapor took less than ten minutes to rise, and when we looked back at the steps we had just climbed, they were gone. Not seeing the road you just walked, that feeling is the gain of hiking in rain, no need to shout it out.
Close with the descent and one small object. Going down my shoes were soaked and the socks could be wrung out, yet I did not mind, because my pocket held a leaf knocked down by the rain, its veins washed pale. Write the leaf: at home I pressed it inside a dictionary, and when the dictionary closes, the mountain is pressed inside. Three scenes plus one small object give the diary a line and a compass. Next time swap in snow or heavy fog and the skeleton still works: hesitate, walk with difficulty, then something brightens, plus one thing you can carry home.
A Rainy Hiking Diary Reviewed: Feelings Hidden in Details
Paragraph one of the model diary: Sunday October twenty sixth, light rain. The car reached the foot of the hill and the rain came. We sat in the car for five minutes, nobody talking. I was the first one out, and the rain hit my cap with a crisp sound. Comment: nobody talking is better than everyone felt hesitant, because it hands the hesitation to the reader. The five words I was the first one out stand as one action; the whole paragraph has no adjectives, yet the feeling shows. To copy: when writing hesitation, count how many words like conflicted or torn appear, delete them, and replace with who moved first.
Paragraph two: the stone steps shone with reflected light. I went down one step at a time, my sole sliding, my knee bracing against the step ahead to stand firm. The railing was cold, water running down along the rust, and my palm was all water too. Comment: the hardest part of this paragraph is the knee bracing against the step ahead, an action the body invents by itself, impossible to fabricate. The trick of writing slippery is writing what the body did to stop slipping, not how slippery the steps were. Water running down along the rust is also good, noticing an old thing in the rain; rust is a detail only rain makes you see.
Paragraph three: the rain stopped suddenly, faster than it had started, with three drops left on my cap. The fog in the valley grew upward from the low ground, first eating the pavilion, then the trees on the half slope, and at last even the sky above us turned white. I suddenly felt a little scared and a little like laughing. Comment: the word eating works well; fog disappearing layer by layer is sequence, and eating is a child word, sequence plus child speech makes a good line. I suddenly felt a little scared and a little like laughing is the only sentence in the whole diary that states emotion directly, but it comes after the fog has eaten everything, so with the groundwork before it, the line is not empty. A diary may state emotion directly only once, placed after the strangest scene.
Paragraph four: going down I could wring water from my shoes. The old man selling umbrellas packed up and gave the two remaining umbrellas to us, one each. I left my wet cap on the trash bin to dry, forgot it when leaving, and ran back for it. Comment: the gifted umbrella and the forgotten cap are both unplanned small events, and the beauty of a diary often lives in the unplanned. When writing a rainy experience, keep one unexpected small thing; it is more memorable than scenery. Forgetting the cap and running back gives the diary human clumsiness, and a flawless diary reads fake.
The closing: at home I dried the cap; its brim had a ring of mud spots, and I did not wipe them off. Comment: did not wipe is an attitude, and the mud spots are the receipt of this rain. The ending does not summarize the gain; it leaves one unresolved thing, and the reader will figure out the gain for themselves. The formula worth copying: write hesitation with actions, slippery with the body, fog with sequence, and direct emotion only once in the whole piece.
